About the Location

Natural Setting

Located in National City, California, just a stone's throw from San Diego, Sweetwater Heights Park offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This green space provides a well-kept environment well-suited for anyone looking to spend some quality time outdoors.

You can find the park near the intersection of E Street and Bay Boulevard, right beside the Living Coast Discovery Center and the Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay RV resort.

Park Vision

Sweetwater Heights wasn't just randomly designed - local community members had their say in creating this special space. The vision? A natural habitat-oriented recreational area that celebrates the unique wildlife of San Diego Bay while encouraging more laid-back outdoor activities.

The park is a beautiful complement to its neighbor, the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.

Recreation Facilities

Fancy shooting some hoops? The park offers a basketball court for visitors. If you're bringing little ones along, they'll love the playground complete with swings where they can burn off energy.

When you're ready to take it easy, settle in at one of the picnic areas for a relaxing meal. The paved paths and walking trails offer options for both casual strolls and more determined walkers looking to get their steps in.

Development Details

At 21 acres, Sweetwater Heights Park is no small undertaking. It's actually part of the broader Chula Vista Bayfront redevelopment project and will be the first new park space completed in this initiative. Once finished, it will become the Port of San Diego's 23rd park along the bay.

What makes this park special is how its design draws inspiration from both the natural world and local history, with thoughtful elements that honor the area's wildlife, natural habitats, and the ancestral lands of the Kumeyaay People.

Construction Timeline

Construction broke ground in October 2023, with plans to welcome visitors by late 2024.

The park is being developed just north of the Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center, another major project currently under construction in the area.
