About the Location
A Park With Wings
Nestled in San Francisco's Parkside District, Carl Larsen Park spans 6.6 acres on the city's western edge. You can find this neighborhood space just west of 19th Avenue where it meets Vicente Street, conveniently situated north of Stern Grove. The park has a heartwarming origin story - it was donated to the city in 1926 by Carl Larsen, a local chicken rancher with a generous spirit.
Between 1959 and 1993, locals knew this place by a different name: "Jet Plane Park" - a nod to the three retired Navy jets that once called this park home. These aircraft weren't just for show; they served as incredible play structures for kids and made the park instantly recognizable from busy 19th Avenue.
Today's Park Experience
Carl Larsen Park got a significant facelift in 2015 with a $1 million playground renovation. The designers thoughtfully included a jet-inspired sculpture and climbing structure that honors the park's aviation history while giving kids modern equipment to explore. The playground carries an airport theme throughout, complete with a soft, rubberized surface that makes falls a lot less painful for adventurous little ones.
A standout feature here is the Charlie Sava Pool, an indoor swimming facility named after a popular local swimming instructor. The pool building isn't your average municipal structure - opened in 2008 and designed by architects Mark Cavagnero and Paulett Taggart, it's actually received recognition for its architectural excellence.
Get Moving
The park's newest addition arrived in December 2023 - a pickleball complex with eight dedicated courts that has quickly become a community hotspot. Drop by and you'll discover a welcoming community of players and a casual drop-in system that primarily accommodates doubles games. Fair warning: the courts tend to fill up on weekends and evenings, a testament to their popularity.
Beyond pickleball, you'll find a well-maintained baseball field and a spacious grassy area meant for everything from impromptu soccer games to peaceful afternoon reading sessions. These open spaces provide room to spread out, whether you're looking to get active or simply soak up some fresh air.
Practical Stuff
What makes this park particularly family-friendly are the two clean public restrooms with all the essentials - running water and soap included. When you're ready to take a break, you'll appreciate the numerous benches and tables scattered throughout the grounds, well-suited for picnics or just watching the world go by.
Getting here is relatively stress-free, with decent street parking in the vicinity. Its position along 19th Avenue makes it easy to spot - a familiar landmark in the Sunset neighborhood landscape.
Carl Larsen Park functions as a neighborhood gathering space for the Sunset, with activities for many different interests. Whether you're bringing kids to the playground, joining a pickleball game, or simply seeking a peaceful green space, this park offers a nice break from city life without having to leave the city.
