About India Basin Shoreline Park

Bay Views Worth Savoring

India Basin Shoreline Park sits along the water's edge in San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. It's part of a plan to create a continuous waterfront space along the India Basin shoreline.

The park offers lovely views of the San Francisco Bay. There's something almost meditative about sitting on one of the bench swings, gently rocking back and forth while taking in the panoramic bay vista that stretches out before you.

A Little Piece of Nature

About 6.2 acres of the park's total 11.8 acres are dedicated to natural areas, including tidal salt marsh and upland habitat that provide crucial food and shelter for local wildlife. This little ecosystem supports various shorebirds and gives hunting grounds to raptors passing through.

If you're into wildlife, the park functions as a small urban sanctuary. Early mornings here are magical - a wonderful time to spot wild geese, ducks, and all sorts of birds while enjoying the peaceful quiet before the city fully wakes up.

Get Moving or Just Relax

The park is an important connector in the San Francisco Bay Trail, giving both walkers and cyclists continuous access along the shoreline. Activities include trail walking, fishing, kayaking, and wildlife observation.

Sports enthusiasts will find a basketball court featuring a vibrant mural by local artist Nina Picasso. Families appreciate the two distinct playground areas - one designed with older kids in mind and another for the little ones. These play spaces come equipped with metal structures, plastic slides, and swings (including safety seats for toddlers). Kids particularly love racing down the giant metal slide near the lower play area.

A network of walking trails connects to neighboring Heron's Head Park via a mix of paved and dirt paths through the marshland. These trails make for perfect daily walks and prime wildlife-spotting opportunities.

The Practical Stuff

You'll come across several picnic areas around the park, featuring stone tables with attached benches, many positioned to take advantage of those beautiful bay views. What's especially nice is that some picnic tables include grills - something you don't often find in San Francisco parks.

A new clubhouse area provides modern, clean restrooms and a small market for basics. And don't worry about staying hydrated - drinking fountains are strategically placed along the trails.

Dog owners take note: the park is dog-friendly, but your furry friends need to stay on-leash while visiting.

Looking to the Future

India Basin Shoreline Park is in the midst of a significant transformation as part of creating the larger India Basin Waterfront Park. This ambitious project will join the existing park with the adjacent 900 Innes property, creating an impressive 10-acre waterfront destination.

The renovation plans include regrading steep slopes to make the park more accessible and creating additional shoreline habitat. Some upgrades are already in place, with more exciting developments on the horizon, including a water sports area where you'll eventually be able to rent kayaks and canoes.

The renovated park will keep and expand its recreational features while creating more spaces for community gatherings, recreation, and play.

Exploring Beyond the Park

If you're up for more exploring, you can reach the India Basin Open Space by walking up Innes Avenue from the Waterfront Park and turning onto Arelious Walker Street. Parking is available at Heron's Head, at India Basin Shoreline on Hawes Street, and at Arelious Walker, with some limited street parking on Innes Avenue.

Environmental Heart

The park occasionally hosts community events like outdoor movie screenings, live music, and environmental education activities.
