About Marina Green
A Breath of Fresh Air on the Bay
Tucked between Fort Mason and the Presidio lies Marina Green, a sprawling 74-acre grassy space with some of the most stunning views in all of San Francisco. From this waterfront perch, you can take in the magnificent panorama of San Francisco Bay, with the Golden Gate Bridge standing majestically in the distance, and both Alcatraz Island and Angel Island dotting the blue waters. The views from this spot showcase why San Francisco is so captivating.
The land has a fascinating past - what's now a lush green space was once a tidal marsh. After the devastating 1906 earthquake, the area was filled with debris from the city's ruins, transforming tragedy into new beginnings. By 1915, this reclaimed land proudly hosted the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, symbolizing San Francisco's incredible resilience and renewal.

Recreation for Everyone
On any given day, you'll find a delightful mix of locals and tourists making the most of this urban oasis. The wide-open lawns are great for picnic blankets, frisbee tosses, and impromptu soccer games. It's perfectly fine to simply stretch out on the grass, soak in the sunshine (or embrace the fog), and watch the sailboats glide across the bay.
If you're feeling more active, the paved paths that wrap around the green are ideal for a morning jog or leisurely bike ride. The San Francisco Bay Trail cuts right through the park, connecting you to miles of scenic waterfront exploring. For those who don't want to skip their workout routine, you'll find exercise equipment stations scattered throughout - possibly the only gym with million-dollar views of the bay.

Four-Legged Paradise
Marina Green is popular with dogs and their owners. The expansive lawns give pups plenty of room to stretch their legs and burn off energy, but you'll want to keep your furry friend reasonably close by in this popular spot.
On sunny afternoons, the park transforms into an informal dog social club, with canines of all shapes and sizes frolicking about. Just remember to bring those clean-up bags - keeping Marina Green beautiful is a community effort.

Maritime Soul
The park's nautical heart beats strongly with its adjacent marina, home to both the St. Francis Yacht Club and the Golden Gate Yacht Club. These establishments contribute to the area's maritime character.
What many don't realize is that Marina Green has also earned its place in aviation lore. In 1920, it briefly served as Montgomery Airfield, named after flying pioneer John J. Montgomery. The park later made headlines again when it hosted the first public demonstration of the Hiller XH-44 helicopter in 1944 - a small but significant moment in aviation history.

What's Happening
Though peaceful most days, Marina Green occasionally transforms into an exciting event space. During SailGP competitions, you can witness high-tech catamarans practically flying across the water at speeds approaching 60 mph - an adrenaline rush even for spectators. October brings Fleet Week, when the Blue Angels perform their heart-stopping aerial maneuvers directly overhead.
You'll find clean restrooms conveniently placed around the park, and for a caffeine fix, look for the Philz Coffee truck typically parked in the lot. Their brew makes an ideal companion for a waterfront stroll.
While free parking exists, spaces fill quickly during nice weather and special events. Consider public transportation for a hassle-free visit, especially on weekends.

Beyond the Green

When you're ready to explore further, you're just a short walk from the majestic Palace of Fine Arts, the restored wetlands of Crissy Field, and the intriguing Wave Organ sound sculpture. With restaurants and shops nearby, Marina Green can easily become the centerpiece of a great San Francisco day.
