About the Location

History and Location

Sue Bierman Park, also known as Ferry Park, is a 5.3-acre urban green space located in the Financial District of San Francisco, California. The park sits adjacent to the Embarcadero and is situated near the iconic San Francisco Ferry Building.

The land that now comprises Sue Bierman Park was formerly occupied by off-ramps of the Embarcadero Freeway. Following the demolition of the freeway after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the area was transformed into a public park.

Park Namesake

The park is named after Sue Bierman, a San Francisco civic activist and Supervisor. It provides a welcome respite from the surrounding urban landscape.

Features and Amenities

The park features large grassy fields and paved walking paths, offering visitors a chance to enjoy nature amidst the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco.

In 2011, the park underwent improvements to enhance its role as a public open space. These enhancements were designed to contribute more fully to the adjacent community and complement the series of open spaces developing along the Embarcadero.

Children's Playground

A notable addition to the park is a children's playground, which was subsequently added to cater to families in the downtown waterfront and adjacent residential neighborhoods. The playground, approximately 5,000 square feet in size, is well-integrated with the surrounding park landscape.

The playground features play equipment for both pre-school (ages 2-6) and school-age (5-12) children.

Recreation and Activities

Sue Bierman Park serves as a versatile space for various activities. It's a popular spot for relaxation, picnics, and casual recreation.

The park's location near the Ferry Building also makes it a convenient stop for tourists and locals alike exploring the Embarcadero area.
