Washington Square Park
About Washington Square Park
A Piece of San Francisco History
Dating back to 1847, Washington Square Park is one of San Francisco's original green spaces and has become an integral part of the city's story. Spanning a modest 2.26 acres, this little urban space holds significant historical importance.
Before becoming the popular park we know today, this land served the practical purposes of potato farming and cattle grazing. During the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire, it transformed into something more vital - a sanctuary for roughly 600 displaced residents who set up temporary homes here when they had nowhere else to go.
What You'll Find There
Situated between Filbert Street (north), Stockton Street (east), Union Street (south), and Powell Street (west), the park's defining backdrop is the Saints Peter and Paul Church, which creates a postcard-perfect scene on the northern edge.
The park got its current look during a 1950s makeover by landscape architects Francis McCarthy and Douglas Baylis. Their design gave us the simple but effective layout we enjoy today: a generous central lawn encircled by walking paths, benches, and trees that provide welcome shade on sunny days.
If you're bringing little ones, there's a playground tucked in the northwest corner that's excellent for younger children. Nature calling? Public restrooms are typically available from 5 AM to midnight daily.
Monuments With Stories to Tell
Take a moment to appreciate the statue of Benjamin Franklin while strolling through the park. Installed back in 1879, it once did double duty as a public drinking fountain - a practical nod to Franklin's innovative spirit.
Don't miss the Volunteer Firemen Memorial either, which honors the brave early firefighters who protected San Francisco when the city was young.

The Park Today
Washington Square offers a breathing space in the busy city, where you can stretch out on the lawn, enjoy lunch, or simply watch the world go by. It welcomes all visitors.
The park hosts various events during the year, from outdoor movies to festivals and exercise classes. Early risers might catch the graceful movements of Tai Chi practitioners who gather regularly here. And yes, you can bring your four-legged friends - the park is dog-friendly, making it a popular spot for local pups to socialize.
The park is surrounded by restaurants, cafés, and bakeries, many serving Italian fare that reflects the neighborhood's cultural roots. Grabbing takeout and enjoying it on the lawn is a time-honored tradition here.
The Neighborhood
Washington Square sits right in the heart of North Beach, San Francisco's charming Italian district. The surrounding streets buzz with authentic restaurants, cozy cafés, and interesting shops that give the area its distinctive character.
The park functions as a gathering spot where locals and visitors alike come together. It's a good place to sit and observe city life unfolding before you.
Protected for the Future
In 1999, Washington Square Park received official recognition as a San Francisco Landmark, acknowledging its importance to the city's heritage. This special status helps preserve the park for future generations.
