About the Location

A Fresh Green Space in Japantown

Tucked between apartment developments on North Sixth Street, Heinlenville Park brings a welcome splash of green to San Jose's historic Japantown neighborhood. This 0.75-acre park just opened its gates on October 10, 2023, creating a peaceful community space between Jackson and East Taylor Streets.

A Story of Compassion and Refuge

Behind this park's name lies a remarkable story. John Heinlen, a German immigrant with a big heart, stepped up during a dark chapter of local history. In 1887, when Chinese immigrants lost their homes after the destruction of Market Street Chinatown, Heinlen offered his land as a safe haven.

This area, known as Heinlenville, became San Jose's final Chinatown and lasted until its demolition in 1931, leaving a meaningful legacy that the park now honors.

Cultural Heritage on Display

Walking through the park, you'll notice thoughtful touches that celebrate the area's diverse cultural past. History panels featuring vintage images and important dates dot the landscape, while medallions embedded in the ground mark significant moments in time.

These elements help tell the story of the neighborhood's rich Chinese and Japanese American heritage, giving you a chance to connect with San Jose's multicultural history while enjoying the outdoors.

Striking Artistic Centerpiece

You can't miss the park's crown jewel - the "Sheltering Wing" sculpture. This impressive 18-foot-high stainless steel creation by artist Roger White Stoller stands as a gleaming landmark within the park. What makes it especially meaningful is that it was designed with input from Asian-American community representatives, ensuring it resonates with the neighborhood's cultural identity.

A Place to Gather

At its heart, Heinlenville Park is about bringing people together. The result of years of passionate work by city officials, community leaders, and local residents, this green space offers a peaceful setting for events, casual meetups, or simply enjoying a quiet moment amid the urban landscape. It's a space that reflects both the neighborhood's history and its continuing evolution.
