About the Location
Breathtaking Bay Views
Tucked along the edge of San Francisco Bay in San Mateo, Seal Point Park is one of those places where you can really feel the subtle magic of Northern California's coastline. Part of the larger Shoreline Parks system, this outdoor haven manages to blend recreation with natural beauty in a way that feels effortlessly authentic.
On clear days (which, let's be honest, can be a bit of a gamble in the Bay Area), you're treated to some seriously stunning panoramic views. The San Mateo Bridge stretches across the water, the San Francisco skyline creates a distant silhouette, and the East Bay hills roll gently in the background. If you're an early riser or sunset chaser, you're in for a special treat - the sky puts on quite a show, painting itself in warm orange hues over the water.

Trails Worth Exploring
The network of paths winding through the park provides perfect routes for walking, jogging, or cycling. Whether you're out for your daily exercise or just meandering to clear your head, these trails offer a refreshing change of scenery from typical urban workouts.
What makes Seal Point especially great is its position along the Bay Trail. If you're feeling ambitious, you can head north toward Coyote Point or south along Foster City for a longer adventure. It's that rare kind of place where you can decide to extend your journey on a whim, following wherever the path (and your energy levels) might take you.

Wildlife Just Being Wild
This isn't a zoo, but you'll still find yourself unexpectedly entertained by the park's diverse wildlife - particularly the birds. From the boardwalk stretching along the Bay Marshes, you might spot the endangered California Clapper Rail going about its day, completely unaware of its celebrity status among birdwatchers.
And true to its name, if you're patient and a little lucky, you might catch glimpses of seals swimming in the bay waters. There's something pretty special about seeing these creatures in their natural habitat, rather than performing for crowds at a pier.

A Dog's Paradise
If you've got a four-legged friend, you're in luck. The park features a generous 3-acre off-leash dog park where your pup can burn off energy and make some new canine acquaintances. It's thoughtfully divided into areas for large and small dogs, so your tiny Chihuahua won't have to dodge Great Danes unless they're feeling particularly brave.
You'll find water fountains specifically designed for pets and plenty of waste bag stations throughout. It's become something of a community hub for local pet parents - a place where both dogs and their humans can socialize freely.

Get Your Heart Pumping
One of the park's distinctive features is a hill complete with stairs that practically beg for a workout. Locals regularly tackle these steps for exercise, and while your legs might protest initially, the 360-degree views from the top make the burning muscles worthwhile.
From this elevated vantage point, you can watch planes making their approach to SFO airport - surprisingly mesmerizing when you're catching your breath between sets. The panoramic bay views from up here somehow make fitness feel less like a chore and more like an opportunity.

Art That Moves You (Literally)
Adding a creative touch to the natural landscape, kinetic sculptures dance with the wind throughout the park. These artistic installations line a path aptly named the Wind Walk, creating an engaging dialogue between art and environment.
There's something oddly meditative about watching these sculptures move with the breeze - a reminder that sometimes it's nice to just stand still and observe the world in motion around you.

The Practical Stuff
The park comes equipped with all the basics you need for a comfortable visit. Clean restrooms are strategically placed near parking areas and the dog park. You'll discover plenty of free parking, which is honestly something of a miracle in the Bay Area, even on busy weekends.
Benches scattered throughout invite you to sit and simply be for a while. One thing to note: shade is pretty limited here, so bring a hat on sunny days. The bay breeze keeps things pleasantly cool, but it can get quite blustery at times - so maybe tuck a light jacket in your bag just in case. Bay Area microclimates are nothing if not unpredictable.
