About the Location
Park Overview
Doyle Park is a 21.76-acre urban park located on the eastern edge of downtown Santa Rosa, California. The park is situated at the confluence of Matanzas Creek and Spring Creek, with Spring Creek forming the northern boundary and Matanzas Creek forming the southern boundary of the park.
The park offers a peaceful environment with beautiful surroundings, making it ideal for various recreational activities, from dog walking to family picnics.
Natural Features
The park features a diverse landscape, including large grassy areas, mature oak trees, maples, and California bay laurel trees. A paved trail follows the shaded riparian woodland along Spring Creek and Matanzas Creek, providing visitors with a natural oasis within the urban environment.
The trail extends from the Doyle Park Clubhouse on Hoen Avenue to a footbridge over Matanzas Creek across from Brook Hill School. The creek area is accessible via small paths, allowing visitors to skip rocks and enjoy the natural water feature.
Recreational Facilities
Doyle Park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. The eastern end of the park contains a fenced and lighted baseball field, which was formerly used by the minor league Santa Rosa Pirates.
The park also includes horseshoe pits and picnic areas with tables and barbecue grills, perfect for family gatherings and community events.
Playground Areas
The park features a well-maintained playground with slides and swings for children to enjoy. There is also a separate fenced play area specifically designed for toddlers and smaller children (ages 2-5), providing a safe space for younger visitors to play without wandering off.
The playground areas are surrounded by grassy spaces, offering families plenty of room to spread out and enjoy outdoor activities.
Dog-Friendly Areas
Doyle Park is particularly popular among dog owners. It features separate fenced areas for unleashed large and small dogs. Additionally, there is a special off-leash dog area in a designated unfenced turf area available from 6-8 am every morning.
Many visitors appreciate the friendly atmosphere where well-behaved dogs and their owners gather to socialize. The expansive grassy areas throughout the park also provide excellent spaces for dogs to exercise and play fetch.
Community Facilities
The Doyle Park Clubhouse functions as a community gathering space and hosts various events and meetings, including Narcotics Anonymous and AA meetings. During certain times, the park also offers infant and toddler music sessions, bringing families together in the outdoor setting.
Since the closure of some parking areas to vehicle traffic, certain sections of the park have become more pedestrian-friendly, allowing for activities such as outdoor Tai Chi classes.
Historical Significance
The park has historical significance, as it was purchased by Frank Doyle as a memorial for his 13-year-old son who passed away in 1921. Frank Doyle, a prominent figure in Santa Rosa's history, was instrumental in the development of the Golden Gate Bridge and established a scholarship fund that continues to benefit local students.
Park Access
Visitors can access the park through multiple entrances. The entrance off Sonoma Avenue and onto Doyle Park Drive provides parking nearest to the playground and dog park.
The entrance off Farmers Lane and west onto Hoen Avenue allows parking near the ball field and clubhouse. Note that the northern Doyle Park Drive entrance is now permanently closed to auto traffic, creating more pedestrian-friendly spaces within the park.
Amenities
