About McKinley Park
A Piece of Stockton's Soul
Set in the heart of Stockton, California, McKinley Park stands as the largest park in South Stockton at a generous 22.3 acres. It's a place with stories to tell, dating back to the late 1800s when it housed the Stockton Municipal Baths with their artesian mineral waters and heated pools that once drew locals seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.
Fresh Beginnings: The 2024 Renovation
As of April 2024, McKinley Park has temporarily closed its gates for a much-needed makeover. This isn't just a touch-up - this is a $15.63 million transformation funded through various state grants and local measures. Sometimes good things require a little patience.
What's in store? The plans include a completely renovated swimming pool and pool house, new picnic shelters ideal for family gatherings, refreshed ball fields for the sports enthusiasts, exciting play areas for the little ones, clean restroom facilities, and updated basketball courts, futsal courts, and soccer fields for athletes of all ages.

Looking Ahead
Beyond the recreational facilities, the renovation will breathe new life into the park's natural elements too. New trees will provide shade for future generations, while landscaping improvements and an updated irrigation system will keep everything lush and green. Path lighting will make evening strolls safer, and parking lot modifications will improve accessibility for all visitors.
If you're marking your calendar, the park is expected to reopen in late 2025 - a bit of a wait.
What Makes McKinley Special
Before closing for its transformation, McKinley Park was a community hub for active lifestyles. Basketball courts, tennis courts, and a handball court offered plenty of options for sports lovers. Skaters found their space too, with a small but appreciated skateboard area.
Weekends at McKinley have always had a rhythm of their own, with soccer games bringing energy and friendly competition to the expansive green spaces. The baseball areas have similarly served as gathering spots for both organized teams and casual players.
Cool Off and Connect
The swimming pool has long been the crown jewel of McKinley Park during hot California summers. At just about $3 for a full day of swimming (with free entry for the youngest visitors), it's been an affordable escape from the heat for local families.
The park's picnic and BBQ areas, including a popular spot near the handball court, have hosted countless birthday celebrations, family reunions, and impromptu get-togethers over the years.

When completed, the renovated McKinley Park will likely once again be a popular gathering place for the South Stockton community.
