About Plaza Park

A Walk Through History

Found in the heart of downtown Ventura sits Plaza Park, the city's oldest green space dating back to 1869. Taking up a full city block between Santa Clara Street, Fir Street, Thompson Boulevard, and Chestnut Street, this park has been a witness to over 150 years of local history.

If you're a bit of a history buff, you'll appreciate the historical plaques scattered within the grounds. These markers tell the story of both the park and Ventura itself, offering little windows into the past as you wander the pathways.

Nature's Giant

The undisputed star of Plaza Park has to be the magnificent Moreton Bay Fig Tree planted back in 1874. Standing over 73.5 feet tall with branches stretching 139 feet and roots extending 87 feet, it's considered one of the largest of its kind in the country. At well over a century old, this living landmark demands a moment of quiet appreciation when you visit.

The park also features a generous grassy lawn area shaded by various trees including tall palms. Keep an eye out for the quirky sideways tree - it's become something of a local conversation piece among parkgoers.

What You'll Find

Paved paths meander through the greenery, well-suited for a casual stroll or a quick shortcut through downtown. If you've got kids in tow, the playground offers plenty of fun with equipment for both toddlers and older children, including slides and four swings (two designed for infants).

The park features a pagoda, a gazebo-like structure that functions as both an architectural feature and a bandstand for community performances. It adds a distinctive character to the landscape.

When hunger strikes, you'll come across picnic tables dotted across the lawn - ideal for an impromptu lunch or planned gathering. And yes, there are public restrooms available, which is always good to know when planning to spend some time outdoors.

Community Heart

Located in downtown Ventura, Plaza Park hosts community events, concerts, and celebrations throughout the year. The St. Patrick's Day parade often makes use of this central space, filling it with color and activity.

The park is conveniently located - there's a multi-level free parking structure less than 1/16 of a mile away, and it's within walking distance of restaurants and concert venues. It makes for an excellent starting point if you're exploring downtown Ventura for the day.

Tributes and Art

The park's most historically layered piece is a bronze cannon that has earned Plaza Park the unofficial nickname Cannon Park among locals. It was cast in a church-run foundry during the era of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines and inscribed "San Buenaventura" - a nod to the California mission. Originally mounted at Fort Santiago in Manila, it was captured by U.S. forces during the Spanish-American War in 1898, and later discovered sitting in a military scrap pile in San Pedro by a Ventura city official. The City Council petitioned the Navy to donate it, and the cannon arrived in Ventura in 1903, eventually finding a permanent home in the park as a veterans' memorial.

Also worth seeking out is the Phoenix Tree Sculpture, carved in 2018 by arborist and artist John Mahoney. Rather than removing a dead pine tree, Mahoney transformed it into the form of a rising phoenix as a tribute to the city following the devastating 2017 Thomas Fire. It's a striking piece that carries real emotional weight for those who lived through the disaster.

The memorial monuments honoring Ventura County heroes add further depth to the space, making this corner of the park feel genuinely reflective rather than purely decorative.

The View

Find the right spot in Plaza Park and you'll be rewarded with lovely views of downtown Ventura, with glimpses of the Pacific Ocean beyond. On warm days, the gentle ocean breeze provides a welcome cooling effect.
