In 2022, Friendship Park received a significant upgrade through a project funded by federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. The improvements, which had a budget of $997,955.50, were recognized with the "Best Projects of the Year Award" from the American Public Works Association (APWA) under the Recreational & Athletics Facilities category for populations between 100,000 to 200,000.

The renovations resulted in brand-new playground equipment and an overall cleaner, more inviting atmosphere that residents and visitors consistently praise. The updated facilities have transformed this local space into one of West Covina's most beloved community parks.
