About the Location
A Bit of History
Tucked in one of Aurora's oldest neighborhoods, Del Mar Park sits on land once owned by William Smith - a local pioneer who not only raised sheep here but went on to establish Aurora Public Schools. Talk about leaving a legacy!
Over the years, this community space has evolved into a vibrant gathering spot where Aurora's diverse residents come together. The park has seen its fair share of renovations as it has grown alongside the community it serves.
Cool Off & Splash Around
If you're looking to beat the Colorado heat, the Del Mar Family Aquatic Center is where it's at. After some major renovations, this water park offers a variety of attractions for families.
The aquatic center is thoughtfully designed with water-efficient features and play structures for kids (and kids at heart) of all ages. Several water slides - including one with tubes - make for a fun afternoon, and the separate areas for different age groups mean everyone can enjoy at their own comfort level. At around $5 admission, it's honestly one of the best deals you can find for a day of water fun.
There's no shortage of lifeguards keeping an eye on things, and the wristband system makes getting in and out a breeze. Fair warning: the place can get pretty packed on weekends, so if you're hoping to snag some shade, you might want to arrive early.
Get Your Game On
More of a land-sports person? You'll find tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, and soccer fields spread around the grounds. There's even sand volleyball courts if you're feeling those beach vibes without the ocean.
The park features several playgrounds designed for different age groups, complete with all the classics - swings, slides, and climbing structures. Interestingly, some of the equipment doubles as exercise stations for adults that just happen to look like play structures. Sneaky fitness, anyone?
For the older crowd, the Del Mar Senior Center hosts various community activities and gatherings, making this truly a park for everyone.
Picnic Paradise
Del Mar Park offers plenty of gathering spaces. Regardless of whether you're planning a family reunion or just a weekend cookout, the grounds offer plenty of room to spread out. You'll find several covered gazebos with stone picnic tables, plus metal tables scattered throughout for more casual seating.
Planning to grill? Public grills near the gazebos have got you covered. The generous open spaces also make it possible to set up tents for larger get-togethers without feeling cramped.
Room to Breathe
Sometimes you just need some green space, and Del Mar has plenty of room for relaxation, impromptu frisbee games, or simply lying on a blanket watching clouds drift by. Walking paths meander through the park, making it a favorite spot for dog walkers (remember to keep those pups leashed!) and daily strollers.
Living nearby? Lucky you - this outdoor retreat is just steps away from many residential areas. All year long, Del Mar Park hosts various community events for local residents.
