A Riverside Retreat
Located next to the Cache la Poudre River between Lincoln Avenue and Mulberry Street in Fort Collins, Homestead Park offers a 31-acre natural escape from city life. This green space came to be through a development agreement with Woodward Company, which gifted the land to the City.
The park offers a nice balance between open grassy spaces and tree-filled areas, creating a peaceful setting where you can observe nature changing over time.
Nature's Comeback Story
Homestead Park is actually in the middle of an impressive ecological makeover. Restoration work has softened those unnaturally steep riverbanks, created diverse habitats including wetlands and open water areas, and given cottonwood trees the chance to regenerate naturally.
These cottonwoods aren't just pretty faces - they're vital ecosystem players, providing homes for wildlife and casting welcome shade along the river corridor.

Where Wildlife Thrives
If you're into wildlife spotting, you're in luck. The park acts as both home and highway for riparian plants and animals. Keep your eyes peeled for waterfowl, owls, foxes, raccoons, squirrels, mink, beaver, and a chorus of songbirds that call this place home.
There are three ponds or small lakes within the natural areas, however only one is easily accessible (the others hide behind dense reeds). If you're patient, you might spot snakes or foxes going about their business - just remember to observe respectfully from a distance.
What To Do Here
Homestead works well for both quiet contemplation and active recreation. Access is easy via the Poudre River Trail, making it excellent for walking, jogging, or simply sitting back and watching nature unfold.
Need a defined exercise route? A paved walking path creates a quarter-mile loop that's level and accessible for most abilities. And yes, you can bring your four-legged friend - the park is dog-friendly, so it's an ideal spot for walking your pup while soaking in some nature.
The Practical Stuff
Families will appreciate the children's playground that tends to buzz with activity, especially after school lets out. When hunger strikes, head to the picnic tables conveniently located under a shelter near the restrooms.
Speaking of restrooms, they're available year-round, though they might close during the coldest winter months. You'll also find plenty of benches scattered within the park when you need a moment to sit and reflect.
A Park in Progress
One of the coolest things about Homestead Park is that it's still evolving. The vegetation is young and establishing itself, with a mature cottonwood forest expected to develop over the coming decades. It's like watching a time-lapse of nature in real-time - a rare opportunity to witness long-term ecological recovery and succession as it happens.
