About the Location

Natural Setting

Homestead Park is a natural area located along the Cache la Poudre River between Lincoln Avenue and Mulberry Street in Fort Collins, Colorado. The 31-acre property was conveyed to the City by Woodward Company as part of a development agreement.

Ecological Restoration

The park underwent restoration efforts to enhance its ecological value. These efforts included lowering unnaturally steep riverbanks, creating diverse habitats such as wetlands and open water areas, and allowing for the natural regeneration of cottonwood trees.

Cottonwoods play a crucial role in the ecosystem, supporting a wide variety of wildlife and contributing to the shady, peaceful atmosphere along the river corridor.

Wildlife Habitat

Homestead Park serves as an important habitat for riparian plants and animals, as well as a movement corridor for wildlife. Visitors may observe various species including waterfowl, owls, foxes, raccoons, squirrels, mink, beaver, and a variety of songbirds that utilize this area.

Visitor Activities

The park offers opportunities for passive recreation and nature observation. Visitors can access the area via the Poudre River Trail, allowing for activities such as walking, jogging, and wildlife viewing.

The natural setting provides a tranquil retreat within the urban environment of Fort Collins.

Future Development

It's worth noting that the vegetation in Homestead Park is still in the process of becoming fully established. A mature cottonwood forest is expected to develop over the next several decades, making the park an interesting location to observe long-term ecological recovery and succession.
