Historic Origins

Situated in the heart of downtown Greeley, Colorado lies Lincoln Park, a 5.7-acre green space that's been part of the community since 1870. That's right - this park has been where Greeley residents have gathered, celebrated, and relaxed for over 150 years, practically since the city's founding days.

The park was designed with the city's social needs in mind, surrounded by an mix of government buildings, churches, homes, and businesses. Today, you'll discover it conveniently situated near the Greeley Downtown Center, UCCC Recreation Center, Doubletree Hotel, and the brand-new Greeley Public Library that opened its doors in 2023.

A Glimpse into the Past

If you'd visited Lincoln Park in its early days, you would have encountered two quaint lakes with rather poetic names - Lake Luna in the southern section and Lake Auricular in the northern part. Both were eventually drained due to practical concerns about mosquitoes and flooding issues with neighboring buildings. The landscape has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing needs of the city.

Community Heart

Lincoln Park has long been a gathering place for Greeley residents. Back in 1894, the space transformed into an agricultural showcase for Potato Day, drawing an impressive crowd of 6,000 visitors who came to admire local farmers' harvests.

Today, the park hosts several community events throughout the year. The popular Arts Picnic fills the park with local artists and vendors showcasing their talents. Octoberfest celebrations bring a taste of Bavaria to Colorado, while the Farmers Market connects residents with fresh, local produce. During winter, the park features holiday light displays brightening the cold Colorado evenings.

Landmarks with Stories

One of the park's most interesting features is the Pioneer Fountain, constructed in 1907 to honor Greeley's founders. This isn't your average fountain - look closely and you'll notice it contains actual seashells and a petrified snake embedded in its stone structure, making it a truly unique historical landmark.

The park's gazebo is a central meeting spot and occasional performance venue for local musicians. Two pavilions scattered within the grounds provide welcome shade and gathering spaces for visitors year-round.

Recreation for Everyone

Kids love the modern playground designed primarily for 5-12 year olds, featuring engaging climbing structures and sensory elements. The equipment is well-maintained and includes accessible features, ensuring children of all abilities can join in the fun.

Across the park, you can find plenty of picnic tables and benches where downtown workers and families can enjoy lunch or simply sit and watch the world go by. The park's wide sidewalks have become something of an unofficial skate spot, popular with skateboarders and roller skaters practicing their skills.

Preserving the Legacy

In 1984, Lincoln Park underwent a significant renovation as part of downtown Greeley's rejuvenation efforts, highlighting its importance to the city's urban landscape. Its historical significance was officially recognized in 1996 when it was added to the Greeley Historic Register.

The City of Greeley takes great care in maintaining the park, with regular upkeep ensuring this historic space remains beautiful and functional for everyone who visits - just as it has for the past century and a half.
