About the Location

A Glimpse of History in the Heart of Downtown

Situated in downtown Waterbury, Connecticut, Library Park carries stories from centuries past. Established in the 1890s and expanded in the early 1900s as part of a civic improvement project, this green haven sits on what was once the town's colonial-era burying ground. Yes, you're walking on hallowed ground - some graves were relocated, while others remain beneath the very soil you stroll across.

What You'll Find There

When summer heat becomes unbearable, the park's mature trees create welcome shadows across the central lawn. They provide natural shade in the middle of the city.

Along Meadow Street, you'll notice something unusual - a brick retaining wall displaying about three dozen gravestones recovered from the library's basement. It's a gentle reminder of those who came before us, adding a thoughtful dimension to your visit.

The park features well-maintained pathways that wind through colorful flower beds and decorative shrubs, making even a quick walk through pleasant. And when your feet need a rest, you can find plenty of seating areas excellent for people-watching, enjoying lunch, or losing yourself in a good book.

Designed by the Best

In the 1920s, Library Park got the star treatment with renovations guided by acclaimed architect Cass Gilbert and the legendary Olmsted Brothers landscaping firm (yes, the same Olmsteds behind Central Park). These improvements were part of a grander vision to create an impressive civic center spanning from the train station to Bank Street.

Recent beautification efforts have enhanced the park's appearance within Waterbury's urban landscape.

Come for the Events, Stay for the Atmosphere

Throughout the year, the park transforms into a cultural hub. The annual Gathering celebration shows off Waterbury's diverse ethnic communities with food, music, and traditions.

If you're a jazz enthusiast, don't miss the Brass City Jazz Festival, where you can experience world-class performances under open skies. This free event typically includes food vendors and draws crowds from all around - families spreading blankets on the grass while seasoned jazz lovers tap their feet to the rhythm.

The park's amphitheater regularly hosts other cultural events and performances too, ensuring there's almost always something happening in this historic space.

A Park for Everyone

Library Park serves various community needs, with activities for people of different ages and interests.

During daylight hours, you'll spot locals walking their four-legged friends along the paved paths, while others might be seeking a moment of tranquility away from the urban rush - all while remaining in the heart of downtown.

Preserving the Past, Enhancing the Future

In recent years, efforts have focused on upgrading the park's aging infrastructure and enhancing its features, while maintaining the historical significance of this downtown Waterbury space.
