About the Location
A Little Urban Oasis
Tucked away in Columbia Heights, Girard Street Park might not be huge, but it's a welcoming neighborhood green space. Sitting at the corner of 14th and Girard Streets NW, this compact green space has become something of a neighborhood living room where locals gather, play, and connect.
After renovations in 2009, the park has a distinctive rubber surface that incorporates "Welcome" in six different languages - reflecting the diverse Columbia Heights neighborhood.
Get Your Game On
Feel like shooting some hoops? The park features a full-sized basketball court that sits about 5 feet below street level on the eastern side - a design choice that creates a sort of arena feel for pickup games. On the western edge, you'll come across raised cement planters that double as casual seating spots - great for catching your breath or cheering on friends.
There's also a turf field that's just right for impromptu soccer matches or tossing a frisbee around. A central path ties these different areas together, and it's pretty impressive how much they've managed to fit into this modest space without making it feel cramped.
Kid-Friendly Zones
The park includes areas for children of different ages. The park has thoughtfully designed play areas for different age groups. Toddlers have their own dedicated playground where they can safely explore and play.
For the bigger kids, there's a more adventurous zone equipped with swings, a climbing wall, slides, and a musical center. The zipline is particularly popular - just be prepared to wait your turn on busy days as kiddos line up for "just one more" ride.
Splash Around
When DC's infamous summer heat kicks in, the park's splash pad becomes the place to be. Children (and sometimes adults) cool off in the spraying water during DC's hot summer months.
Neighborhood Hub
The park is designed to welcome everyone, with plenty of benches and some tables scattered throughout where you can relax, have a snack, or just people-watch. Its location right next to the Columbia Heights Community Center makes it even more of a neighborhood focal point.
Need a restroom? You can use the facilities inside the recreation center. Parking can be a bit tricky - there are street spots available, but you might need to circle the block a few times, especially on beautiful weekend days when everyone has the same idea.
But that's just a testament to how this thoughtfully designed space has become a year-round gathering spot for families, friends, and community programs in this corner of DC.
