About the Location
Location and Layout
Tucked away in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest DC, Grant Circle Park forms a green oasis centered around a busy traffic circle. It sits where New Hampshire Avenue, Illinois Avenue, Varnum Street, and 5th Street all come together in a traffic circle.
The park itself is not only the circle - it includes two triangular green spaces nearby. At about 1.8 acres, it's a compact space. One lap around equals roughly a quarter mile - convenient for a lunchtime stroll or morning jog when you're short on time.
Features and Landscaping
This urban circle features a mix of open lawns, tall trees, and arranged shrubs and hedges. Notable is a large Himalayan cedar that's been part of the neighborhood for generations. There's even a bit of local pride around it - back in 1939, The Washington Post mentioned how "Petworth has worked to keep statuary out of Grant Circle--preferring cedar of Lebanon."
You'll notice how the plantings follow the same geometric patterns as DC's famous street grid. Need a break? The park offers plenty of benches to catch your breath, along with water fountains for you (or your four-legged friend) to stay hydrated. Walking paths crisscross the space, and the grassy areas are suitable for picnics when the weather's nice.
Like many of DC's circle parks, this one falls under the care of the National Park Service as part of its Rock Creek Park management area.
Historical Significance
Here's a fun fact: this wasn't always Grant Circle. It started life as Sheridan Circle before being renamed in 1889 to honor Ulysses S. Grant, the Civil War general who became president. The park took shape in the late 19th century as Petworth itself was growing and developing.
The circle must be doing something right - in 2015, it and the surrounding buildings earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, recognizing its importance in DC's urban development story.
Amenities and Usage
Dog owners, rejoice! The park is dog-friendly, although your pup needs to stay leashed, and you'll need to clean up after them (as any good neighbor would). The space stays true to its natural roots without too many modern intrusions, save for some metal grates covering a Metro power station that was built underneath in 1998.
You won't find restrooms here, so plan accordingly. What you will find is a peaceful retreat from city life - a space where you can read a book, sit under the cedar, or simply watch the world go by.
