About the Location

Location and History

Situated in the Judiciary Square neighborhood of Washington, D.C., John Marshall Park offers a green haven between Pennsylvania Avenue and C Street NW, right next to the Canadian Embassy.

The park emerged during the 1980s as part of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation's efforts to breathe new life into the area. It bears the name of John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States who served from 1801 to 1835.

Interestingly, Marshall once lived in a boarding house that stood right where the park now flourishes. As a towering figure in American legal history, Marshall spent over three decades on the Supreme Court, helping to elevate both the power and prestige of our Federal court system.

Design and Features

Landscape architect Carol Johnson crafted this space with three terraced levels that cleverly navigate a 12-foot grade change. The lowest terrace along Pennsylvania Avenue is paved in a pattern that tips its hat to Pierre L'Enfant's original city plan and provides welcome shade trees.

The central terrace remains open, preserving unobstructed views of the Old City Hall building. Head up to the upper terrace and you'll come across two fountains - a thoughtful nod to the site's history as Washington's first public water supply location.

Across the park, you'll come across plenty of seating scattered across its spacious layout. It's an ideal spot to take a breather, enjoy lunch, or have a conversation while soaking in the urban atmosphere.

Monuments and Artwork

Facing Pennsylvania Avenue stands a bronze statue of Chief Justice John Marshall - a recast of William Wetmore Story's 1884 original that graces the Supreme Court.

The park also features a charming bronze sculpture called The Chess Players, showing two life-sized figures deep in thought over their game - a nod to one of Marshall's favorite pastimes. Look closely and you'll notice the older player clutching a bishop piece (reportedly modeled after the artist's father), while the younger opponent was inspired by the artist's son.

Visitor Experience

Amid downtown's hustle and bustle, John Marshall Park offers a quiet moment of respite with its benches and green spaces - great for relaxing and taking in views of nearby landmarks. Unlike playgrounds designed for children, this park better serves adults looking for a peaceful urban retreat.

The park makes a great spot for people-watching, enjoying a sandwich, or simply stretching your legs during a day exploring the city. You'll appreciate its convenient location in the heart of the Judiciary Square district, making it an easy stop while exploring Washington's legal and historical institutions.
