About the Location

Historic Origins

Located in the heart of Petworth in Northwest DC, Sherman Circle is both a traffic circle and a leafy urban sanctuary. Named after Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman, this 2.3-acre circular green space sits at the crossroads of Illinois Avenue, Kansas Avenue, 7th Street, and Crittenden Street NW. It's officially part of the National Park Service's larger Rock Creek Park family, though it has its own distinct neighborhood vibe.

Surrounded by a ring road and residential homes, it offers a welcome dose of nature amid the city bustle.

Design and Layout

The circle features a network of concrete paths that crisscross the park, making it easy to cut through or meander around the space. If you're looking for a convenient workout spot, a lap around Sherman Circle is about one-third of a mile - good for tracking your running distance without venturing far from home.

While it feels like it's always been part of the neighborhood fabric, Sherman Circle was first mapped out in 1889 but wasn't officially established until 1923. Landscape architect Irving W. Payne designed the space with connectivity in mind, creating thoughtful links between the main circle, four surrounding triangular parks, and the broader Petworth community.

Amenities and Features

You can find benches scattered throughout the park - ideal spots to take a breather, dive into a book, or simply watch the world go by. Need to hydrate? Water fountains are available to quench your thirst during warmer months.

The open grassy areas make for perfect impromptu picnic spots, but you'll need to bring your own blanket as there aren't any picnic tables. Trash cans are conveniently placed around the circle, making it easy to keep the space clean.

Development Through the Years

Sherman Circle has evolved gradually over time. In 1926, the area was graded and seeded, transforming it from plan to reality. Three years later, sidewalks were added, making the space more accessible for locals.

More recently, in 2012, 21 pedestrian lamps were installed around the circle, enhancing both the ambiance and safety of evening strolls.

Community Value

Sherman Circle is a gathering place for Petworth residents. The tranquil setting offers a green retreat where neighbors can unwind from city life without actually leaving the city.

Families with children often gather here, letting the little ones burn off energy on the grassy expanse. The paved pathways provide a safe space for wobbly new bike riders to practice their skills. And if you're a dog owner, you'll be in good company - the park is dog-friendly and a popular spot for daily walks.

The well-maintained grounds - with regularly cleaned benches and attentive leaf removal - show the ongoing care of this neighborhood space.
