Colee Hammock Park
About Colee Hammock Park
Riverside Retreat
Found in Fort Lauderdale, Colee Hammock Park is a little 1.1-acre glimpse of serenity that's easy to miss but hard to forget. This pocket-sized park sits right along the south fork of the New River, where everything from tiny kayaks to impressive yachts drift by throughout the day, creating a constantly changing waterfront scene.
With mature trees casting cool shadows across the grounds, it's an excellent spot to spread out a blanket and escape the Florida heat. The waterfront location offers nice views of the river, passing boats, and the mansions lining the opposite shore.
Historical Significance
Before it became a neighborhood hangout, this land was once part of William Cooley's plantation back in the early 1800s. The park takes its name from James Louis Colee, who set up camp here while workers were busy constructing the Intracoastal Waterway.
You'll spot a historical marker placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution that tells part of this story, but history buffs might note that some accounts suggest certain historical events happened slightly elsewhere than indicated. Today, it's a quiet green space in the middle of the city, where locals come to unwind and enjoy the river views.
Recreational Opportunities
The park is small but has its own character. You won't find playgrounds or sports fields here - this is more of a place for simple pleasures. Bring a good book, watch for birds in the trees, or just sit and appreciate a moment of quiet in the middle of urban Fort Lauderdale.
If you're into fishing, you might want to bring your gear - the clear waters occasionally reveal tarpon and manta rays swimming by. Many visitors simply come to watch what locals call the "boat parade" - the steady stream of vessels that navigate the waterway throughout the day.
Amenities and Features
The park keeps things simple with several strategically placed benches and tables that make the most of those waterfront views. These spots are excellent for enjoying a morning coffee or having a laid-back picnic under the shade of the sprawling trees. The grassy areas are well-kept if you prefer to bring your own blanket or portable chair.
Parking is limited to just a few free spaces right at the entrance, typically with a three-hour maximum stay. If you're exploring Fort Lauderdale by water, you can also reach the park via water taxi - stop #2 is just a short walk away, adding another layer to the experience of discovering this secluded place.
Visitor Experience
There's something about Colee Hammock Park that invites you to slow down. The peaceful atmosphere makes it ideal for meditation or yoga, or just sitting quietly while the river breeze rustles through the leaves overhead. The park takes on a magical quality around sunset, when the colors reflect off the water and the evening brings a different energy to the waterway.
Just off the busier Las Olas Boulevard, this little park offers a moment of peace from Fort Lauderdale's more touristy areas. Whether you're taking a break during a bike ride, looking for a quiet spot to read, or planning a small get-together with friends, the park offers a calm setting with pleasant water views.
