About the Location

Florida's Champion Live Oak

Take a moment to imagine standing beneath the Cellon Oak, Florida's largest live oak when it comes to crown spread. This natural giant stretches an impressive 160 feet across, with a trunk circumference of about 30 feet and soaring to a height of 91 feet.

If you're planning a visit, just remember to keep about 20 feet away from the trunk to protect its sprawling root system. The co-champion live oak is still magnificent from that distance. With its fantasy-novel presence (seriously, it could be straight out of Middle-earth), and branches extending so far that one actually needs external support, it's a sight that stays with you.

Park History

The park bears the name of Ralph W. Cellon, who owned this land before Alachua County acquired it. The county established the park to protect this extraordinary tree while allowing public access.

No one knows exactly how old the Cellon Oak is, but it's clearly been standing watch over this region for generations, a silent witness to Florida's changing landscape.

Visitor Experience

The massive tree creates a natural sanctuary with its expansive canopy of shade - excellent for escaping Florida's sunshine.

You'll often find the park hosting small weddings, family photo sessions, or simply people seeking a quiet moment with nature. Many visitors come here to slow down - reading books, sketching the oak, or simply relaxing on the grass beneath its branches.

Amenities

The park intentionally keeps things simple to preserve its natural character. You can find a few picnic tables and a small grill available if you'd like a meal in the shade of this remarkable tree.

The grounds themselves are primarily open grassy fields surrounding the oak, with persimmon trees and other native species dotting the landscape and adding to its natural charm.

Note that there are no restroom facilities here, so plan accordingly. Trash receptacles are available throughout - please use them to help keep this special place pristine for everyone.
