Natural Setting

What was once a horse farm has now transformed into a peaceful 30.4-acre forest retreat right in the middle of Gainesville. The area is slowly returning to its natural state through succession, creating a little pocket of tranquility amidst city life. Large hardwood trees stand tall along the picturesque Beville Heights Creek, while the slopes above the creek feature seepage wetlands bursting with ferns and colorful wildflowers.

If you're into wildlife watching or birding, you'll come across plenty to observe here across different seasons. Spring is particularly magical when azaleas, fringe trees, and Florida anise plants bloom, painting the landscape with vibrant colors.

Trail Experience

A half-mile hiking trail meanders through the park's diverse ecosystems, offering a great quick nature fix. Bring your four-legged friends along - they're welcome here! The well-shaded path keeps things comfortable even when Florida's sun is working overtime, and you'll discover plenty of benches scattered along the way when you need a breather or want to sit quietly and observe nature.

The natural path is generally well-maintained, but you might struggle a bit with baby strollers on some sections. Most hikers report minimal bug encounters, and despite being surprisingly close to urban areas, the trail maintains a serene atmosphere that makes you forget you're still in the city.

Park Amenities

At the heart of Cofrin sits a playground and a covered picnic area, making it well-suited for family outings. The playground is nicely shaded and features swings (including some for the little ones), a slide, jungle gym, and monkey bars - enough equipment to keep about ten children happily occupied.

Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a tennis court on the grounds. For those planning to eat outdoors, you'll come across wooden tables scattered among the trees and larger metal tables under a gazebo, with some spots even equipped with grills. Practical amenities include restrooms at the trailhead and a bike rack if you'd prefer to cycle over and explore the trail on foot.

Memorial Garden

One of the most touching features of the park is the Judy Broward Survivors of Suicide Memory Garden. This thoughtfully designed space offers comfort and healing for those who have lost someone to suicide.

The garden features a small brick labyrinth, a stone sculpture, and benches that invite quiet reflection. You might notice natural ornaments left behind by visitors honoring loved ones. Just across a small bridge, there's also a native plant garden that beautifully complements this special memorial space.

Visitor Information

The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 8PM. One thing to note is the limited parking, which can be challenging during peak times - consider alternative transportation when possible. Cofrin's modest size makes it ideal for short visits, whether you're squeezing in a quick nature walk, planning a family picnic, or simply seeking a moment of peace away from the bustle of everyday life.
