About the Location
A Legacy That Lives On
Named after T.B. McPherson, this park carries the spirit of a man who wore many hats in the Gainesville community - teacher, coach, minister, recreation board member, and civic leader. Back in 1969, the city honored his contributions to Gainesville's development by naming this recreation center after him. It's a meaningful way to preserve his legacy in the community.
What You'll Find Here
Spread across about 15 acres, this complex offers a wide variety of recreational options. It blends indoor and outdoor spaces, making it perfect no matter what Florida's sometimes unpredictable weather decides to do.
At the heart of it all stands the T.B. McPherson Center, an indoor hub where community programs and events come to life. As you wander the grounds, you'll notice several statues that add a touch of cultural flair to your visit.
Take a Dip
When Florida's heat cranks up, the Andrew R. Mickle, Sr. Pool becomes one of the park's most popular spots. Part of Gainesville's city aquatics program, it's a refreshing oasis during those warmer months when even the shade doesn't quite cut it.
For the Sports Enthusiasts
Athletic types will feel right at home here. The basketball courts come with lights for those evening games when the sun goes down but your energy doesn't. The tennis courts have been recently renovated, improving the playing experience.
If baseball or softball is more your speed, the park offers diamond fields for play.
Room to Breathe
Sometimes you just need to move at your own pace. The park's walking path offers a peaceful route for a morning jog, an afternoon stroll, or a casual bike ride. It's nothing fancy - just a nice, straightforward way to enjoy being outside.
The picnic areas here aren't just an afterthought. With tables, grills, and plenty of space, they're fantastic for everything from intimate family picnics to larger community gatherings.
Kid-Friendly Spaces
The large playground gives kids a dedicated space to burn off energy and make new friends. What makes it especially nice is the abundance of shade trees surrounding it - a blessing that any parent who's touched scorching playground equipment in the middle of a Florida summer will appreciate.
Really, those shade trees around the park are unsung heroes, making T.B. McPherson enjoyable even when the sun is at its fiercest.
Community at Heart
The complex hosts various programs including after-school activities for local kids. The Gainesville Area Community Tennis Association is also based here, offering youth tennis programs and other initiatives.
