About the Location
A Forest Haven in the City
Situated in Hollywood, Florida, John Williams Park covers 33 acres of natural space that feels removed from urban life. The crown jewel here is the Sheridan Oak Forest, complete with a nature walk where interpretive signs tell you all about the local plants you're passing by.
The park offers something of a wilderness experience within the city. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot hawks soaring overhead or other birds flitting through the oak hammock. Nature enthusiasts take note: while most of the park welcomes explorers, the Sheridan Oak Forest section is currently off-limits to protect the endangered species that call it home.
A notable feature is the dense tree canopy that provides significant cooling shade even during Florida's hottest days. Step under those leafy giants and feel the temperature drop as the city noise fades away.
Get Moving or Just Unwind
Whether you're a scout planning an overnight adventure or someone looking for a peaceful afternoon, the park balances natural elements with visitor amenities.
Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the 0.84-mile paved walking path that winds through the trees (just do 1.2 laps to hit a full mile). The trail's almost completely shaded, making it one of the few places you can comfortably exercise outdoors even in summer. Thoughtfully placed benches along the way provide perfect spots to catch your breath or simply sit and soak in the surroundings.
If you've got kids in tow, head to the gated playground with its jungle gym structures and slides. It's designed with 5-12 year olds in mind, however smaller adventurers might find some sections a bit challenging. While trees provide good coverage here too, those plastic slides can still heat up by afternoon - just something to keep in mind.
More Than Trees
Dog parents, rejoice! The park features a dedicated dog park with thoughtfully separated areas for large and small four-legged friends. Each section comes equipped with water stations and seating where you can relax while your pup socializes. It's a popular spot for local dog owners to let their pets run free in a safe environment.
Planning a gathering? Multiple covered pavilions dot the grounds, complete with tables and available for reservation through the city. There are also grilling areas with several grills and even a fire pit for those who prefer their nature with a side of barbecue.
You'll come across clean restroom facilities near the entrance, and there's plenty of parking available - though it can get quite dark in the evening, so bring a flashlight for night visits.
The Vibe
What really sets John Williams Park apart is its peaceful atmosphere. Even on weekends, you'll rarely find crowds here, making it excellent for meditation, reading, or simply listening to the rustling leaves.
One word of caution - bring insect repellent! Mosquitoes can be particularly enthusiastic residents, especially during certain seasons. But honestly, it's a small price to pay for such an accessible piece of natural tranquility that you can enjoy year-round.
