About the Location
History
Tucked away at the intersection of Boulevard and Eighth Street in Jacksonville's West Springfield area, John N. McPherson Park has roots that stretch back to the turn of the 20th century. This green space was once part of the larger Springfield Park, established between 1899 and 1901 on land donated by the Springfield Company.
As the years passed, the surrounding area evolved into a bustling medical hub, complete with hospitals and a public health clinic. The park we know today took shape in 1990, thanks to the initiative of the Historic Springfield Community Council and the City's oversight.
Park Features
Originally dubbed Gateway Park (a fitting name given its role as a welcoming entrance to Springfield), the park later became home to the Henry J. Klutho Memorial Gazebo in 1992, adding a touch of architectural charm to this urban oasis.
Namesake
In 2004, the space received its current name to honor John McPherson (1928-2000) - a remarkable individual who served 27 years in the Navy across three wars. Beyond his military service, McPherson poured his heart into the community as an activist, volunteer, and champion of neighborhood improvements. His lead-by-example approach inspired many locals to get involved in community efforts.
Community Significance
Today, the park represents a cherished gathering spot for Springfield residents, offering a much-needed touch of green tranquility in the urban landscape. It's not only a park but also a living connection between Jacksonville's rich history and its present, providing both open space and recreational opportunities for everyone in the community.
