About the Location
Park Overview
Situated in Jacksonville, Leonard Abess Park spans 35 acres of green space that feels like a breath of fresh air amid the urban landscape. Named after Leonard L. Abess Sr., a banker whose generosity provided the land to the city, this community space has been bringing people together since its dedication on October 19, 1994, by Mayor Ed Austin and Councilman Dick Brown.
Sports and Recreation
If you're looking to get active, there are several options. The park includes two youth baseball fields, a basketball court for pickup games, two tennis courts, and a soccer field where locals enjoy weekend games.
Not feeling particularly sporty? No problem. The paved trails offer a peaceful setting for a morning jog or an evening stroll. And when hunger strikes, head to one of the picnic areas complete with grills and shelters. The covered gazebos provide welcome shade on sunny days, with enough room for 2-3 tables each - excellent for family gatherings or catching up with friends.
Playground and Splash Pad
The recently renovated playground is a hit with the younger crowd, featuring new equipment, swings, and slides. Thoughtfully designed with two separate play sets - one for the little tots and another for bigger kids - parents can relax knowing their children are playing on age-appropriate equipment.
On hot Florida days, the splash pad becomes the place to be. It's especially nice in the morning when the toddler playground sits in perfect shade, keeping the equipment cool enough for tiny hands and feet to explore safely.
Dog Park
Since September 2020, four-legged family members have their own space to romp and socialize. Located at the back of the main park (a short walk from the main areas), the dog park gives pups room to run off-leash and make new friends.
With separate areas for large and small dogs (under 25 pounds), every dog can play safely regardless of size. The large dog section offers plenty of space to run with partially wooded areas providing both open fields and shaded spots for exploration. Both you and your furry friend can stay hydrated with water fountains designed for humans and canines alike.
Amenities
No need to cut your park day short - restrooms are conveniently located near the playground and splash pad. Drinking fountains are scattered around the grounds, and there's ample parking available, however you might want to arrive early during baseball games or soccer matches when spaces fill up quickly.
With its blend of natural beauty and practical amenities, Leonard Abess Park creates a fantastic backdrop for everything from family outings and team practices to peaceful solo walks and community events.
