Patton Park
About Patton Park
A Bit of History
Nestled along Hodges Boulevard in Jacksonville, Florida, Patton Park spans a generous 120 acres of community space. The park came to life in 1993 through the generosity of the Patton family, who donated the property to the City of Jacksonville. Today, while the city maintains ownership, the First Coast Soccer Association manages the grounds through a lease agreement.
For the Athletes
At its heart, Patton Park thrives as a soccer haven, boasting thirteen year-round soccer fields that serve as home turf for countless matches and practices. The quality of these grassy fields varies with the seasons and usage, but they're generally well-kept and manicured. If you're coming to watch a game, the main field offers stadium/bleacher seating where you can cheer on your favorite players.
The park expanded its athletic offerings in 2007 with the addition of a football field near the entrance. Over the years, these fields have hosted some impressive talent, as practice grounds for professional teams including Jacksonville Football Club (JFC) and Armada FC.
Beyond the Fields
When you're not focused on the action, Patton Park offers plenty of practical amenities. You'll come across enclosed concession stands for game day snacks, clean restroom facilities, and picnic areas complete with tables and shelters for a post-game meal. During tournaments, food trucks often roll in, expanding your refreshment options beyond the standard concessions.
If you've got kids in tow, head to the right of the entrance where you'll discover a well-shaded playground. The tall tower with a large slide is a particular hit with older children who love the thrill of the descent. While most of the equipment is in good shape, just be aware that some of the metal structures can heat up considerably during Florida's summer months.
Need to stretch your legs? The park's paved walking trails wind through the property, great for a casual stroll while waiting for the next match to begin. Throughout the grounds, shade trees offer welcome respite from Jacksonville's sunshine.
Know Before You Go
The park provides paved parking areas, but they fill up quickly during tournaments and weekend games. You'll want to arrive early on busy days to snag a spot. Also, consider bringing your own chairs or blankets, as seating can be limited depending on which field you're watching.
One thing to note is that Patton Park has just one entry and exit point, which can create some traffic backups during major events. If you're planning to spend the day watching games, portable shade structures are a smart addition to your gear, as some fields have minimal natural shade.
Community Heart
Beyond just a recreational space, Patton Park holds a special place in Jacksonville's soccer community. It is home base for numerous youth soccer programs that have shaped generations of local players. The park's legacy is deeply connected to the late Randy Powell, affectionately known as "Mr. Patton Park," who dedicated years of his life to maintaining the fields and nurturing youth soccer programs that continue to thrive here today.
