About the Location
A Touch of History in Downtown Miami
Tucked between gleaming skyscrapers and the shimmering waters of Biscayne Bay lies Mary Brickell Park (or simply Brickell Park), a compact two-acre green haven in Miami's bustling financial district. This little urban oasis stretches from Brickell Avenue right to the bay's edge, offering a peaceful retreat from city life.
This neighborhood park has historical significance as part of Miami's origin story. Back in 1925, the prominent Brickell family donated this land to Miami, ensuring future generations would have this public space to enjoy. The park's Brickell family mausoleum remains on the grounds, though William and Mary Brickell (Miami's founding namesakes) were eventually moved to Caballero Rivero in Little Havana. History buffs might also appreciate that the park contains a pre-Columbian archaeological site, adding layers of time beneath your feet as you stroll.
Where Nature Meets the Metropolis
Situated just 500 feet south of the Miami River, Brickell Park offers a refreshing contrast to its concrete surroundings. One of its most charming features has to be the oldest coconut groves in Miami that line the waterfront. From here, you can take in stunning views of Biscayne Bay and Brickell Key across the water - it's a little piece of tropical paradise right in the urban core.
A meandering walking path invites you to explore the grounds, and if you're feeling energetic, simple outdoor workout stations along the way provide opportunities for a quick exercise session. You'll often spot locals from nearby high-rises walking their dogs, getting in their morning jog, or simply finding a shady spot under a tree to unwind.
Small Park, Big on Amenities
Don't let its modest size fool you - Brickell Park packs in plenty of recreational options. Kids will love the recently renovated playground with its modern equipment designed for adventure and fun.
Feeling hungry after all that play? The park features several food trucks nearby offering diverse cuisine options. Covered picnic tables make this a great spot to enjoy lunch if you work in the area, or to have a casual family meal after the little ones have worked up an appetite.
Natural Encounters
Keep your eyes peeled for the park's resident iguanas that can frequently be spotted sunning themselves across the grounds. These impressive reptiles tend to keep to themselves, but it's best to admire them from a distance rather than attempting to interact with them.
Though not Miami's largest green space, Brickell Park has a distinctive character. The contrast between the natural elements and downtown skyscrapers creates an interesting setting for locals and visitors exploring the city's financial district.
