About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Found in Pompano Beach, Florida sits Indian Mound Park - a modest 1-acre patch of land with significant historical importance. At its heart stands a Native American burial mound dating back a millennium and rising about 16 feet from the ground. Not just any ancient structure, this is the last surviving mound of its kind in Broward County.
The mound contains remains of roughly 100 Tequesta indigenous people who once called this region home. Walking through this space gives you a connection to another time - the park functions as a memorial to the Tequesta, with informational displays that help you understand who these people were and how they lived.
Sacred Rituals
The creation of this mound wasn't a simple task. The Tequesta transported countless baskets of sand from nearby beaches to build this sacred structure. Archaeological findings reveal a fascinating burial process: they would allow bodies to decompose naturally before carefully cleaning the bones and placing them in the mound with heads oriented toward the sunrise.
This east-facing arrangement wasn't random - it likely connected to sun worship practices. There's something profoundly moving about standing in a place where people conducted sacred ceremonies and laid their loved ones to rest over a thousand years ago.
Experience it Yourself
You can follow a path to the top of the mound, placing your feet where the Tequesta once stood centuries ago. From this vantage point, you'll enjoy lovely views of Lake Santa Barbara and the Intracoastal Waterway. It's a surprisingly peaceful spot to watch boats glide by or take in a spectacular Florida sunset.
Despite its compact size, the park offers a genuine sense of tranquility. You'll often find locals here meditating, reading, or simply sitting quietly, connecting with the ancient energy of the place. The grounds are well-kept, creating a calm oasis in the midst of modern Pompano Beach.
What to Know Before You Go
Parking is somewhat limited - you'll discover just a few spaces along the street that runs parallel to the Intracoastal. Around the park, benches invite you to sit and reflect on the historical significance of where you're standing or simply enjoy the waterfront views.
There's a covered picnic table overlooking the water if you'd like to bring a small meal and dine with a view. Note that there are no restrooms available on-site. The park is pet-friendly, with waste bags provided if you bring your four-legged friend along.
Beyond the Mound
The waterfront location makes this spot a great jumping-off point for other adventures. Nearby kayak rentals offer the opportunity to paddle the Intracoastal Waterway and see the area from a different perspective.
Indian Mound Park may be small, but it combines historical significance with natural Florida beauty in a quiet corner of Pompano Beach.
