About the Location
Park Overview
Located in Tallahassee's Northeast quadrant, A.J. Henry Park spans a generous 72 acres, offering a natural escape for residents of the seven surrounding Killearn neighborhoods. The park's dense tree canopy creates a refreshingly cool microclimate compared to the rest of the city, offering relief from Florida's notorious heat. It's like nature's air conditioning right in the middle of urban life.
History
The City of Tallahassee scooped up this piece of land back in March 1985, transforming it into the recreational haven we know today. Named after its previous owner, Dr. Joe Henry, the park's development kicked off in 1986 with a helping hand from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program.
Natural Features
A.J. Henry Park is a nature lover's dream with its diverse landscape. Hardwood forest-covered slopes lead down to a serene lake, creating scenery that feels removed from city life. The magnificent Live Oak trees dominate the landscape, weaving together a forest canopy that makes you forget you're still within city limits.
Keep your eyes to the sky and you might spot Mississippi Kites or Broad-winged Hawks soaring overhead during late spring and summer months. The lake becomes a hotspot for waterfowl when winter rolls around. Kids particularly love watching the numerous turtles that call the lake home - they're easily spotted from the boardwalk and never fail to delight young visitors.
Trails
Hikers and nature enthusiasts will appreciate the 2.1-mile trail system that winds through the park. With two loops measuring 1.2 and 0.9 miles, these beginner-friendly paths are well-suited for a casual stroll or a light workout. The ravine loop trail stands out as an especially scenic route if you're looking for that perfect nature photo.
Though unpaved, the trails remain surprisingly smooth and level, occasionally crossing over a babbling creek. A charming boardwalk section offers prime viewing of the lake and its residents. Feel free to bring your four-legged friend along - the trails are dog-friendly. And if you're into horseback riding, certain sections accommodate that too.
Recreational Amenities
A.J. Henry Park offers several amenities. Picnic areas with shelters dot the landscape, alongside a large pavilion that's ideal for gatherings. The open field provides plenty of space for impromptu sports or simply lounging on a blanket. You'll come across multiple covered picnic tables and grilling stations scattered throughout, making it easy to plan a day-long outing.
The playground caters primarily to children between 5-12 years old, but younger siblings can enjoy the swings and slides too. While not the most elaborate play equipment you'll come across in Tallahassee, it's clean and well-maintained. There's also a half-court basketball area if you're feeling competitive.
Wildlife Viewing
If connecting with nature is your goal, head to the lake area or the lower (north) parking lot - these spots tend to yield the best wildlife sightings. Birdwatchers will want to visit during spring and fall migrations when the trails become highways for various feathered travelers.
The lake area's claim to fame is its surprisingly large turtle population. You'll often see families gathered at the boardwalk, lettuce in hand, ready to make some turtle friends - an experience that typically becomes the highlight of any child's visit.
Visitor Information
You can find clean, well-maintained restrooms on site - always a plus for any park outing. Most of the main facilities are wheelchair accessible, though some trail sections may present challenges. One word of advice for summer visits: don't forget your insect repellent. The shady, wooded areas that make the park so pleasant can also harbor ticks and mosquitoes during warmer months.
