Recreational Pathways
The Capital Cascades Trail winds through the park, offering a paved path for walking, jogging, and cycling. The trail connects various segments of the park, including the 24-acre Cascades Park, which serves as a central feature of the linear park system.
As visitors travel west along the trail, they encounter various features and amenities. A distinctive white-canopied pedestrian bridge, known as the Capital Cascades Crossing, takes trail users over Monroe Street.
Park Overview and Design
Capital Cascades Trail Park is a linear urban park stretching approximately 2.7 miles, starting from Franklin Boulevard and extending westward along FAMU Way. The park serves multiple purposes, functioning as both a recreational space and a stormwater management facility.
The park is part of a larger project that combines conventional drainage with green infrastructure to help combat flooding in the area. It features a series of interconnected ponds and waterways designed to slow down, filter, and store runoff during major storm events.
Amenities and Attractions
Cascades Park itself contains multiple amenities and points of interest, such as an amphitheater, interactive fountain, and children's play areas. Near Adams Street, a 10-foot tall steel and cypress "TLH" art installation provides a photo opportunity for visitors.
Throughout its length, the Capital Cascades Trail Park offers green spaces, seating areas, and gathering spots. These areas provide opportunities for relaxation, picnics, and community events.
Cultural and Historical Elements
The park incorporates elements of local history and culture. For instance, the Smokey Hollow Commemoration within Cascades Park pays tribute to a historic African American community. Additionally, the Korean War Memorial can be found along the trail.
The park's design includes extensive landscaping, adding to its aesthetic appeal and environmental benefits.
