Rich History

Opened in 2014, Cascades Park sits on the very ground where Tallahassee was founded back in 1821, spanning 24 acres of urban greenspace with a story as deep as its roots. It's not just a pretty face, though - beneath its scenic surface, the park cleverly doubles as a sophisticated stormwater management system.

The park's connection to that founding moment is direct. In 1821, two commissioners were dispatched to find a midpoint location for Florida's new capital - somewhere between Pensacola and St. Augustine. When they arrived at what is now Cascades Park, they encountered a dramatic natural waterfall that made a strong impression. Commissioner John Lee Williams described the stream plunging "20 or 30 feet into an immense chasm," and it was this spectacle that led them to select the nearby hill as the site of the capital. The Florida State Capitol now stands roughly a quarter mile northwest of where that original waterfall and sinkhole once were. Because of this direct role in shaping the territorial government's decision, Cascades Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Walking through Cascades is like flipping through Tallahassee's history book. The Smokey Hollow Commemoration pays tribute to a once-thriving African-American community that called this area home. If you're looking for a moment of reflection, the Korean War Memorial offers a touching space to honor veterans. History buffs will appreciate the informational panels scattered throughout, including one at the Prime Meridian Plaza - the exact point from which all Florida land surveys begin.

The site has worn many hats over the years. In the early 20th century it hosted minor league baseball and football games as Centennial Field, before transitioning to industrial use. From 1895 until the late 1950s, the city ran a manufactured gas plant here, a process that left coal tar and other toxic compounds embedded in the soil and groundwater. The cleanup effort required excavating more than 70,000 tons of contaminated soil, which was transported to an EPA-approved landfill in Georgia - a remediation completed in 2014, the same year the park opened.

Trails and Features

Lace up your walking shoes - Cascades Park offers 2.3 miles of smooth, paved trails great for walking, jogging, or biking. These well-maintained paths connect to the larger Capital Cascades Trail system and eventually link to the St. Marks Trail that stretches all the way to the Gulf Coast. The trails are well-lit after dark for evening strolls.

There are scenic viewpoints and resting areas along the paths when you need a break. Several bench swings scattered throughout provide perfect spots to catch your breath, read a book, or simply watch the world go by.

Family Attractions

If you've got kids in tow (or just want to embrace your inner child), head to the Imagination Fountain. This interactive water feature has 73 jets that spray water in random patterns, creating a playful atmosphere. This popular splash pad offers welcome relief during Florida's sweltering summer months.

Nearby, the Discovery play area engages young explorers with natural materials designed to stimulate their senses and imagination. Children can enjoy climbing structures, slide down a large slide, or play in sandy spaces - all designed to blend fun with nature.

Entertainment and Events

The park's Capital City Amphitheater is where Tallahassee comes alive with music and culture. This venue can host up to 3,500 people with its combination of fixed seating and a comfortable sloped lawn area. The acoustics are impressive, accommodating everything from local symphony performances to major acts like Earth, Wind & Fire.

You can visit Cascades Park any time you like - it's open 24 hours. Clean restrooms are conveniently located near the amphitheater and other central areas, and multiple picnic spots with covered tables make it well-suited for an outdoor lunch or dinner.

Four-legged friends are more than welcome at this dog-friendly park. You'll find water fountains specifically designed for dogs and waste stations along the walking paths. Just remember to keep your pup leashed in most areas.
