About Monkey Business Park

Residents-Only Retreat

Located in northern Leon County, Florida, Monkey Business Park is a private retreat within the Killearn Lakes Plantation community. At its heart lies Lake Monkey Business, a 39-acre man-made lake dating back to the early to mid-1950s. It was created by Julian C. "Bull" Headley as part of what was then known as Bull Run Plantation.

If you're not a Killearn Lakes resident, you'll have to make friends with someone who is - this spot is exclusively for community members. Access requires passing through a gated entrance with a key available for purchase at the homeowners association office.

Fishing Paradise & Wildlife

Lake Monkey Business is home to sizable largemouth bass, various panfish, and hefty catfish. Don't be surprised by the lake's characteristic green tint - that's just photosynthetic plankton doing their thing. The lake bottom is a maze of small branches and trees, partially thanks to some industrious local beavers who've made their mark on the landscape.

Park Features

Leave your motorboat dreams at home, but feel free to bring smaller watercraft - there's a convenient boat ramp for launching your canoe or kayak. Several docks dot the shoreline, ideal for casting a line or simply sitting back to soak in the views.

The park boasts a grassy isthmus shaded by magnificent live oak trees draped with Spanish moss - a nice spot for picnicking. The island sitting in the middle of the lake is connected to shore by two bridges.

Natural Beauty

The still waters reflect the surrounding trees, and the island offers a quiet space away from the main park area.

Good to Know

Though the park is beautiful, swimming isn't permitted - the lake is home to alligators, and occasional plankton blooms make the water conditions unpredictable.

In years past, community members gathered here for an annual fireworks display on July 4th, however budget constraints have put this tradition on pause in recent years. The park continues to be a popular spot for Killearn Lakes residents.
