Al Lopez Park

Natural Oasis

Located in the heart of Tampa, Al Lopez Park features two expansive ponds that are fantastic for a quiet afternoon of fishing or simply watching nature do its thing. The fishing pier on the southern shore of the north pond gives you a prime spot to cast your line and maybe catch a glimpse of the underwater world.

The ponds are a veritable bird paradise with herons, egrets, and ibises making regular appearances - a treat for birdwatching fans. Just a heads up: you might spot an alligator or two in the water, so keep a respectful distance and pay attention to those warning signs. Nature's cool, but is best admired from afar!

Trails for Every Pace

If you're looking to get your steps in, you're in luck. The park has a 1.2-mile paved interior loop that's wide enough for everyone and lit for those early morning or evening excursions. Whether you're walking, jogging, biking, or skating, this multi-purpose trail works well, with mature trees providing welcome shade along many stretches.

Craving something a bit more rustic? The park's nature trail meanders through wooded areas, offering a peaceful escape and the chance to connect with local plants and wildlife. Even when Tampa's heat is cranked up, these partially shaded paths keep things reasonably comfortable.

Family Fun Zones

Kids need to burn off energy? The multiple playgrounds cater to different age groups, so little ones and bigger kids alike can find their happy place. These play areas are well-kept and offer plenty of equipment for climbing, sliding, and imagination-fueled adventures.

For the fitness-minded, exercise stations dot the trails, letting you mix cardio and strength training in one workout. The basketball courts and open fields provide even more options to get active or just toss a frisbee around.

Dog parents will appreciate the Jim Urbanski Dog Park with its thoughtfully separated areas for large and small furry friends. Special water fountains designed just for dogs and plenty of room to run make this a canine favorite.

Your leashed companions are welcome throughout the rest of the park too, and you'll find plenty of doggie bag stations to help keep things clean and pleasant for everyone.

Community Hub

The Cordelia B. Hunt Community Center adds another dimension to the park with its fitness center, computer lab, and multi-purpose rooms where locals gather for various activities. The center is open from morning to afternoon with staff on hand to assist.

Scattered across the grounds are numerous picnic shelters complete with tables and grills - excellent for family gatherings or small get-togethers. Planning something special? These popular spots can be reserved ahead of time through the city's parks department.

Practical Perks

When nature calls (the other kind), you'll come across clean restrooms conveniently located within the park. Water fountains and benches are strategically placed along trails and near activity areas for when you need a quick drink or a moment to catch your breath.

The park offers ample parking in multiple lots around its perimeter, however fair warning - these can fill up during peak times and special events.
