About the Location

Natural Features

At the heart of Fred Ball Park lies a natural spring and fountain with quite the backstory. Back in the early 1900s, locals flocked to Palma Ceia Spring believing its waters had healing powers. Today, that same spring feeds a decorative fountain that occasionally houses some interesting fish - though we should mention the fountain isn't always operational.

The park provides a green space with views of Tampa Bay. You'll find plenty of shady spots under mature trees, open grassy areas, and benches excellent for soaking in the scenery. One nice feature is the constant breeze off the water, which helps on warmer days - a good spot to sit and relax.

Park Features

The park has a gazebo as its centerpiece. It's become something of a romantic spot, apparently - the gazebo and surrounding area have become a popular setting for intimate weddings and elopements.

Picnic tables are scattered throughout if you're in the mood for an outdoor meal. One of our favorite touches has to be the swinging seats facing the bay - there's something so peaceful about gently swinging while watching the waterfront.

Nature lovers will appreciate the butterfly garden with native plants, adding a splash of ecological diversity to this modest urban sanctuary.

History

Before becoming Fred Ball Park, this little green space was known as Palma Ceia Spring Park. Nestled off Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, it was renamed after Fred Ball, a dedicated public servant who gave 24 years to Tampa and Hillsborough County in various local government roles.

It was actually Ball who convinced the county to purchase the spring property back in 1947 and transform it into a public park. While it's not the largest park in the area, Fred Ball Park combines a natural setting with some Tampa history, centered around its natural spring.

Location and Access

Situated along Bayshore Boulevard, the park is easily accessible for anyone walking, jogging, or cycling on the adjacent waterfront trail. Many people use it as a jumping-off point for adventures along the popular Bayshore Fitness Trail.

There's a small parking area with limited spaces - definitely a plus when planning to explore the Bayshore area. Just keep in mind that during busy times, finding a spot can be a bit challenging.

Amenities

The park is well-maintained and clean, providing a quiet spot in South Tampa. You'll find drinking fountains available when you need to hydrate. Note that there aren't any public restrooms within the park itself - the nearest facilities are across the street.

Dog owners will be happy to know the park is dog-friendly, making it a nice spot for walking smaller pups, however there isn't a fenced area or dedicated dog run.
