A Park With History

In 1908, Hugh MacFarlane - a key player in West Tampa's development - generously donated 40 acres of land to create what is now the 24.7-acre MacFarlane Park. That kind of origin story isn't easy to forget, and the Tampa Historical Preservation Commission agrees, having recognized it as a historic site that acknowledges its century-plus role in community life.

The park sits in the heart of West Tampa, Florida, and has been a gathering place for the surrounding neighborhood ever since its founding.

Trails That Invite You In

Feel like stretching your legs? The park's 1.2-mile asphalt trail loops around the perimeter, offering a fantastic path for morning jogs or evening strolls. Five feet wide and well-maintained, this trail attracts everyone from serious runners to seniors from the nearby David Barksdale Senior Citizen Center looking for a peaceful walk.

The scenery alone makes MacFarlane worth visiting. Magnificent Spanish moss-covered oaks and fragrant magnolias create natural canopies around the grounds. These mature trees, coupled with expansive grassy areas, create a tranquil escape from the busy streets of Tampa.

Sports enthusiasts will find plenty to love here. The park has eight pickleball courts, two tennis courts, and four racquetball/handball walls that double as tennis practice walls. There are also basketball courts and various sports fields ready for impromptu games or organized matches.

If you're visiting with children, the accessible playground is a highlight. What makes it special is its thoughtful design with multiple play zones suitable for kids of all abilities. Children can explore musical instrument stations or play on equipment featuring wheelchair ramps and accessible components. Parents can relax a bit knowing the playground surface is made of soft, padded turf for those inevitable tumbles.

Planning a family reunion or birthday celebration? MacFarlane Park offers several covered pavilions available for reservation. These spaces come with picnic tables, and some areas have charcoal grills nearby for afternoon cookouts.

The park's community center represents a focal point for local activities, while the adjacent David Barksdale Senior Citizen Center runs programs specifically designed for older adults. For seniors interested in these programs, there's a modest annual membership fee of $15.
