About Ala Wai Promenade
Scenic Waterside Path
The path through the Ala Wai Promenade is embraced by magnificent Chinese banyan trees (Ficus microcarpa) that create natural archways along your walk. These gentle giants do double duty - they're not only beautiful but also provide welcome shade that can make Hawaii's warm days much more bearable.
This linear park runs alongside the Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu, stretching about a third of a mile from Kalakaua Avenue to Ala Moana Boulevard and creating a pocket of calm in the heart of the city.
Water Activities and Views
As you stroll along, the Ala Wai Canal opens up beside you, often dotted with canoe paddlers practicing their craft. There's something distinctly Hawaiian about watching these teams glide through the water, their paddles moving in perfect rhythm - a little cultural connection that happens naturally here.

The waterway also attracts various birds, making this a surprisingly good spot for some casual birdwatching if you're into that sort of thing.
Peaceful Urban Retreat
What makes this place special is how it feels worlds away from the nearby traffic, despite being right in the city. The wide, brick-paved upper platform includes plenty of benches where you can take a moment to just sit and be.
Cement paths step down toward the water, making this little oasis accessible for most visitors. If you're looking for a morning jog route, an afternoon stroll, or just a quiet place to clear your head, the tranquility and those gorgeous trees create an excellent backdrop.
Community Connection
Beyond just being a pretty place, the Ala Wai Promenade acts as an important link between Waikiki and Ala Moana neighborhoods. If you're looking for a shortcut between Kalakaua Avenue and Ala Moana Beach Park, this is your path.

The middle section has organically evolved into a casual meet-up spot for local dog owners, adding a friendly neighborhood vibe to the space. Note that you won't find restrooms or drinking fountains along the way, so plan accordingly before setting out for your walk.
