About Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Park in Honolulu
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park is a small public park located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. The park, formerly known as Gateway Park, was officially renamed in 2007 to honor Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who is considered the father of modern China and had significant ties to Hawaii.
The park is situated on the corner of Bethel and Hotel streets, occupying approximately half an acre of land. It serves as a tranquil green space amidst the urban landscape of Honolulu's Chinatown district. The park underwent extensive renovations that were completed in 2022, enhancing its appeal and functionality.
At the heart of the park stands a bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, sculpted by Chu Tat Shing. The statue depicts Sun as a 13-year-old boy, the age at which he arrived in Honolulu from China in 1879 to attend school. This statue serves as a focal point and a reminder of Sun's connection to Hawaii.
The park features landscaping with trees commonly found in Chinese gardens, such as bamboo, Hong Kong orchid, and pak lan. These botanical elements contribute to the park's serene atmosphere and provide shade for visitors. The renovation project also included the installation of new lighting, irrigation systems, and decorative paving.
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park not only offers a peaceful retreat for locals and tourists but also serves as an educational space, highlighting the historical and cultural links between Hawaii and China. It stands as a testament to the multicultural heritage of Honolulu and the influential role Hawaii played in shaping modern Chinese history.
