Kānewai Community Park
About Kānewai Community Park
Recreation Spots & Sports Facilities
Let's talk about cooling off on those warm Hawaiian days - Kānewai Community Park has a swimming pool that's well-suited for just that. Maintained by Honolulu's Department of Parks and Recreation, you can count on the water being clean and safe for a refreshing dip or some lap swimming.
If you're more into court sports, the park has two full basketball courts and tennis courts where you can challenge friends to a game or practice your skills. There's also space set aside for volleyball and pickleball, however you'll need to bring your own nets if you want to play these games.
There are also ball fields available. The two baseball fields double as soccer/football fields, giving you multi-purpose spaces for team sports. Fair warning though - the fields could use a bit more TLC according to regular visitors.
Green Spaces
Need a spot to spread out a blanket and enjoy some downtime? The park has plenty of grassy areas ideal for picnics, tossing a frisbee, or simply lounging with a good book. These open spaces are popular spots for families and friends looking to enjoy Hawaii's beautiful weather together.
Playground & Amenities
Kids will find a children's playground with metal equipment to climb and explore, but it's worth noting these can heat up considerably under the Hawaiian sun. The playground equipment shows some signs of age and might be due for an update soon.
When nature calls, you'll come across restroom facilities with separate men's and women's bathrooms available. And good news for dog owners - the park is dog-friendly, so your four-legged family members can join in on the outdoor fun.
Location & Access
Situated near University of Hawaii at Manoa, Chaminade University, and Saint Louis School, this park rarely has a quiet moment. Its location makes it popular with students and locals alike.
One heads-up about visiting: parking is limited to about 15-20 spaces, which can be tricky during the school year. You might need to hunt for street parking nearby, so plan accordingly if you're driving over.
Community Hub
Kānewai is centrally located between Manoa, St. Louis Heights, and the Kaimukī area near Waialae Avenue. With its mix of active sports areas and relaxing green spaces, you'll see people doing everything from workouts to casual hangouts.
