Cornell Square Park
About Cornell Square Park
A Glimpse into History
Situated in Chicago's urban landscape, Cornell Square Park opened its gates in 1905 as part of a groundbreaking neighborhood park system. The South Park Commission created this green space in Chicago's crowded tenement districts - changing the landscape of urban living at the time.
Spanning a generous 8.85 acres, the park honors Paul Cornell (1822-1904), a forward-thinking lawyer and real estate developer who championed the South Park System. Cornell poetically described parks as providing "lungs to the great city and its future generations" - a vision he helped shape during his 14 years on the South Park Commission board.
Thoughtful Design
The park bears the creative fingerprints of the nationally acclaimed Olmsted Brothers landscape architects and Daniel H. Burnham and Co. architectural firm. As one of the first ten properties in this innovative park system, Cornell Square was thoughtfully designed to serve the community both indoors and out.
At the heart of the park stands a fieldhouse featuring elegant Beaux-Arts design. Inside, you'll discover two gymnasiums, an auditorium, and a kitchen - all spaces that have served generations of community members. Step outside, and the park unfolds with diverse recreational spaces for everyone to enjoy.
What You'll Find Today
No matter if you're a sports enthusiast or simply seeking some fresh air, Cornell Square Park offers plenty of options. Active visitors can take advantage of the baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and soccer fields. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, the open grassy areas offer perfect spots for picnics, reading, or simply watching the clouds drift by.
On hot summer days, the swimming pool and splash pad become neighborhood favorites. For families with young children, the park includes a modest but well-equipped playground. Practical amenities like clean restrooms and shelter areas ensure your visit remains comfortable, whatever the weather decides to do.
Community Hub
The park keeps evolving with the needs of its community. In 2014, the playground received a fresh update through Mayor Emanuel's Chicago Plays! Program.
Year-round, Cornell Square hosts various activities - from after-school programs during the school year to a six-week summer day camp for children. Family-friendly events dot the calendar, including holiday celebrations and the ever-popular Movies in the Park series.
Over the years, the park has established itself as a gathering place for community events, including fundraisers for the Peace and Education Coalition. The grounds are generally well-maintained and clean, but locals express interest in seeing even more organized activities to fully utilize this neighborhood site.
