About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked between West Ridge, Lincoln Square, and North Park neighborhoods, Legion Park stretches across 51.66 acres of Chicago greenspace. This oblong patch of nature runs from Peterson Avenue in the north to Foster Avenue in the south, with Kedzie and Jersey Avenues marking its western boundary.
The park functions as a family-friendly space - there's plenty of room for kids to play and for furry friends to explore (just remember to keep those pups leashed!). With its generous layout, you'll find space for everything from lazy afternoon lounging to active weekend sports.
Historical Background
Legion Park has roots in the early 20th century when the River Park District established it to honor the veterans who served in World War I as part of the U.S. Expeditionary Forces. The park really began taking shape after 1930, when officials leased an 18-acre stretch along the east bank of the North Shore Channel from the Sanitary District of Chicago.
The park didn't stop growing there. In 1962 and again in 1969, the park expanded with additional land from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, reaching the size we enjoy today.
Since 1934, the Chicago Park District has been at the helm, continually improving facilities and nurturing the natural areas that make Legion Park special.
Natural Features
Perhaps the park's greatest charm is its position alongside the North Shore Channel, offering peaceful views that make you forget you're in the middle of a bustling city. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the nature area spanning over nine acres, where native prairie and riparian habitats showcase the region's natural beauty.
Watch how the channel flows south to eventually join the North Branch of the Chicago River. The pathways lined with mature trees and diverse plants offer a contrast to the city surroundings - a little breathing room within Chicago's urban landscape.
Recreational Trails
Lace up your walking shoes or hop on your bike to explore Legion Park's excellent trails that connect seamlessly with neighboring parks to the north and south. These paths offer some of the most picturesque views in the area, with the channel on one side and lush greenery on the other.
Dotted along these trails are welcoming seating areas where you can catch your breath and soak in the surroundings. No matter if you're training for a marathon, taking your daily constitutional, or giving your dog some exercise, these paths provide a peaceful respite from city living.
Park Amenities
In 1999, the park added a lovely gateway area at the corner of Lincoln and Peterson Avenues. Here you'll find an ornamental fountain that adds a touch of tranquility to the park entrance. It's become something of a local landmark and a popular spot for photos - you might even stumble upon a wedding party posing for pictures on a summer weekend.
Active visitors have their pick of facilities including baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and soccer fields. If water recreation is more your style, a boat launch offers access for small watercraft, while anglers can find spots along the channel to cast a line.
Playgrounds and Picnic Areas
Kids love the fantastic playground that's thoughtfully designed for various ages, with equipment that promises hours of fun and healthy activity. Parents might appreciate that there are even exercise features nearby, so you can squeeze in a workout while keeping an eye on the little ones.
When hunger strikes, you're free to set up your picnic anywhere you please on the open grassy areas - no designated picnic zones means complete flexibility. Grab a blanket, pack a lunch, and claim your perfect spot under the shade of a tree or in a sunny patch. This easy-going approach makes Legion Park great for impromptu family gatherings or weekend hangouts when Chicago's weather cooperates.
