About the Location

A Touch of History on the Shore

Leone Beach Park spans 2.81 acres of lakefront beauty in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood. Dating back to 1919, this compact green space was originally acquired by the City of Chicago's Bureau of Parks and Recreation from the Department of Water. In 1966, they renamed it after Sam Leone - and trust us, this guy earned it. Leone was a notable Park District employee who started as a lifeguard after serving in the Navy during World War I and eventually became supervisor of lifeguards for the entire North Side. He was remarkably dedicated - he actually lived above the beach house and continued watching over swimmers until his passing in 1965 at age 65.

Sand, Surf, and Sunshine

The heart of Leone Beach Park is, of course, its sandy stretch along Lake Michigan, where you can relax, take a dip, or simply soak in those gorgeous lake views. During summer (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day), lifeguards keep watch over the designated swimming area. If you're into distance swimming, you can paddle parallel to shore from Lunt Avenue to Farwell Avenue.

Just a heads-up: there are some rocks and stones scattered in the sand and underwater, so tread carefully. Leone is typically less crowded than other Chicago beaches - good to know if you're looking for a more peaceful lakefront experience. Early birds take note: this spot offers beautiful sunrises over Lake Michigan.

Beyond a Beach

Leone Beach Park offers more than just sand and water. There's a well-maintained playground with equipment for kids of different ages, conveniently located a short walk from the beach area - making it ideal for family outings.

The park also hosts the Junior Lifeguard program, training future water safety pros right on site. Practical matters are covered too: paid parking is available with plenty of spaces (just remember to find one of those payment machines to enter your license plate number). Restrooms are on-site, however they might have limited hours depending on when you visit.

Get Your Feet Wet (Literally)

For the more adventurous water-lovers, Leone Beach provides access to the Lake Michigan Water Trail, well-suited for non-motorized activities like kayaking and canoeing. Just note that motorized boats aren't allowed here, and if kiteboarding is your thing, you'll need to head over to Montrose Beach instead.

The beach is a favorite among locals for swimming and wading, especially when Chicago's summer heat kicks in. Having lifeguards on duty makes it a safer option for swimmers of all experience levels.

Nature's Touch

Surrounding Leone Beach Park is plenty of greenery that supports local wildlife - you might even spot rabbits hopping around if you're observant. Next to the beach runs a quiet nature trail that's meant for a leisurely walk.

Look north and you'll discover interesting rock formations where waves crash dramatically - a particularly mesmerizing sight when the wind picks up.

Good to Know Before You Go

The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM, but there are some rules to keep in mind for everyone's enjoyment: no smoking, no alcohol, and no dogs on the beach. If you're bringing children, especially near the water, make sure to keep a close eye on them.

Keeping Leone Beach clean isn't just the park district's job - it's something we all contribute to as visitors. This lakefront space benefits from everyone doing their part to keep it clean.
