About the Location
Lake Michigan Shoreline
Loyola Park spans approximately 21.5 acres along Lake Michigan, offering a variety of activities and amenities suitable for individuals and families of all ages. The park's central feature is its proximity to the lake, with nearly two-thirds of a mile of walking trails along the picturesque shoreline.
The beach is a popular spot during summer, with swimming permitted when lifeguards are on duty. Though distance swimming is not available, the site offers access to the Lake Michigan Water Trail for non-motorized activities like kayaking and canoeing.
Natural Features
The park is home to a unique natural dune habitat, which attracts bird watchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Initially established by the North Shore Park District in 1917, it was later integrated into the Chicago Park District in 1934.
Over time, the park has evolved, incorporating new facilities and expanding its size to meet the needs of the growing East Rogers Park community.
Recreational Facilities
One of the highlights of Loyola Park is its large fieldhouse, equipped with two gymnasiums, a woodshop, a boxing center, and clubrooms available for rental. Outside, the park boasts extensive sports facilities, including two baseball diamonds (one with lights), a basketball court, sand volleyball courts, and four tennis courts.
The park also features a modern playground with an engineered wood fiber surface. Metered parking options are available, and the park is easily accessible by public transportation via CTA buses and the Red Line.
Community Events
Throughout the year, the park hosts community events such as the Artists of the Wall Festival on Father's Day weekend, day camps, and various sports tournaments. Family-friendly activities, seasonal celebrations, and offerings like craft workshops further enhance the park's appeal.
Special recreation programs for individuals with disabilities are also available. Whether for relaxation on the beach, a scenic walk, or participation in community events, Loyola Park remains a vibrant and integral part of Chicago's recreational landscape.
