About Mandrake Park in Chicago
Mandrake Park, also known as Henry Brown Park, is a 10.16-acre recreational space located in the Oakland community of Chicago, Illinois. The park is situated at the corner of East Pershing Road and South Cottage Grove Avenue, with the fieldhouse positioned across the street from the playground and track.
Dedicated in 2001, the park serves as a tribute to Henry McNeil "Mandrake" Brown, a community activist who made significant contributions to improving the quality of life for local residents. Brown was particularly known for his efforts in combating the proliferation of alcohol and tobacco advertisements in the community, especially near schools and churches.
The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. Its playground equipment, which appears to date back to the park's dedication, includes structures for both younger and older children. The larger structure features multiple slides, including a triple slide, and unique climbing elements such as an offset corkscrew climber and a ring/bubble climber.
Mandrake Park provides ample space for sports and physical activities. It features tennis courts, basketball courts, and baseball diamonds. The park also includes a track for running and walking. For those seeking a more relaxed visit, there are picnic tables and benches scattered throughout the grounds.
The park's fieldhouse offers additional amenities and serves as a hub for community activities. It houses bathrooms and a drinking fountain, providing essential facilities for park-goers.
