Weigand Riverfront Park
About Weigand Riverfront Park
Park Overview
Located next to the western branch of the DuPage River lies Dorothea Weigand Riverfront Park - a 16.2-acre natural haven in the heart of suburban Naperville. This tranquil spot provides a nice escape from daily hustle, whether you're looking to lose yourself in a good book, enjoy some quiet reflection, or simply stretch your legs outdoors.
Trail System
Winding through the park are about two miles of brick paths and bridges that connect to the larger DuPage River Trail network. The smooth, paved trails are well-suited for pretty much everyone - walkers, joggers, bikers, parents with strollers, and even inline skaters all share these paths comfortably.
If you're looking for a nice workout, try the 3-mile round trip from the parking lot toward 75th Street and back. On hot summer days, you'll appreciate the sections of trail that duck under shady tree canopies - a literal breath of fresh air when the sun's beating down.
Water Activities
The DuPage River isn't just pretty to look at (though it certainly is that) - it's also a playground for water enthusiasts. Fishing spots dot the riverbank, however you'll need to bring your Illinois fishing license if you plan to cast a line.
Feeling more adventurous? The park offers access points for canoeing and kayaking, letting you experience the river from a different perspective. Water levels fluctuate all year long, creating slightly different shoreline experiences with each visit.
Seasonal Recreation
When winter blankets Naperville in snow, Weigand transforms into a cold-weather playground. The park's sled hills become the center of attention, drawing families and thrill-seekers ready to zoom down the slopes. It's particularly entertaining to watch dogs bounding up and down these hills, often looking more excited than their owners.
The park's mix of open meadows and tree-shaded areas means you can find your perfect spot regardless of season - sun-soaked grassy patches for picnic blankets or cool shelter when temperatures climb.
Nature and Wildlife
If you're into birdwatching or photography, bring your binoculars or camera - the park's diverse habitats attract numerous bird species all year long.
The wildflower areas burst with color during growing seasons, creating a magnet for butterflies and adding vibrant touches to the landscape. This blend of flowing water, prairie plants, and mature trees creates a surprisingly rich ecosystem despite the urban surroundings.
Amenities
Scattered across the grounds are several picnic tables, with a concentration near the parking lot, making impromptu outdoor meals easy and convenient. Four-legged friends are welcome, and you can find waste disposal bins placed strategically along the trails.
Note that the park doesn't have restroom facilities, so plan accordingly. Some riverbank areas show signs of erosion, and depending on where you wander, you might hear traffic noise from nearby Washington Street.
Community Space
Weigand Riverfront is popular with locals year-round. Whether you're meeting friends for a group walk, taking a solo hike to clear your head, or simply finding a riverside spot to sit and watch the water flow by, it's a nice place to connect with nature in a suburban setting.
