About the Location
A Symbol of Peace and Unity
Established in 2002, this 2.5-acre plaza serves as a symbol of peace, celebrating diversity and Rockford's rich ethnic heritage. It is situated on Rockford's east side near Perryville Road.
The plaza functions as a trailhead for the 20-mile Perryville Path recreational trail, linking to Rock Cut State Park.
Inspiring Sculptures
The park's centerpiece is the "Harmony Atlas," a 15-foot-by-34-foot sculpture symbolizing the interconnectedness of the world. The granite base upon which the sculpture rests features engraved quotations from ten notable advocates for peace, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Mother Teresa.
Encircling this heart of the plaza is the "Harmony Index," designed by nationally renowned sculptor Lee Sido, which depicts two connected circles around a world map, symbolizing unity through diversity.
Cultural Representation
A unique feature of the plaza is the Court of 44 Flags, representing nationalities of immigrants in the Rockford area. Complementing this is a series of five Peace Poles, eight-foot-tall obelisks that proclaim the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in over 60 languages.
The plaza also includes a timeline of immigration in Rockford, acknowledging the region's diverse communities and cultural roots.
Educational Mission
Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza is not only a tranquil setting for reflection but also an educational space, featuring programs like the International Day of Peace for local children. It aspires to inspire residents and visitors to embrace personal responsibility in fostering a more peaceful and accepting world.
