About the Location
A Piece of Springfield History
Positioned on East North Grand Avenue in Springfield, Illinois, Lanphier Park has been a neighborhood fixture since the late 19th century. Originally known as Reservoir Park, this green space has evolved over the decades to offer various recreational opportunities. Named after the adjacent Lanphier High School, it's become a beloved part of the Springfield Park District's family of outdoor spaces.
The Pride of the Park: Robin Roberts Stadium
A notable feature of Lanphier Park is Robin Roberts Stadium, which has been standing since 1928. This charming baseball venue seats 5,200 fans and has seen countless memorable games over its nearly century-long existence. The stadium pays tribute to Springfield's own Robin Roberts, a baseball Hall-of-Famer who made the city proud. Today, the crack of the bat still echoes through the stadium as it hosts everything from high school championships to collegiate competitions.
More Than Just Baseball
While the stadium might grab the headlines, there's plenty more to enjoy at Lanphier Park. The basketball courts are usually buzzing with activity, from pickup games to impromptu tournaments. There's also a versatile tennis court that doubles as a pickleball court - good for when you want to switch things up.
If competitive sports aren't your thing, you'll appreciate the picnic shelters and sprawling green spaces that are ideal for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Just bring your own blanket or camp chair, as benches can be a bit sparse in some areas of the park.
Getting There and Getting Around
The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 9PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy what it has to offer. There's a dedicated parking lot if you're coming by car, although some of the side streets could use more sidewalks for those arriving on foot.
As evening approaches, parts of the park can get a bit dim - better lighting would be a welcome improvement for those twilight basketball games or evening strolls.
Community Space
Lanphier Park has been a gathering place for Springfield residents over the years. Whether you're watching a game at the stadium or finding a quiet spot to read under a tree, the park offers space for both active recreation and relaxation outdoors.
