Beckwith Memorial Park is named for Frank R. Beckwith, an Indianapolis native born in 1904 who broke significant barriers in his lifetime. This 5.24-acre green haven on East 30th Street has been offering Indianapolis residents a breath of fresh air since 1970.
Beckwith wasn't just any local figure; he made history as the first African American to appear on an Indiana statewide general election ballot during his gubernatorial run. Walking through this park, you're literally strolling through a piece of Indiana's civil rights history.
