About the Location
A Glimpse of History
Tucked away in Indianapolis, Rhodius Park stretches across 23.1 acres of green escape from the urban bustle. The park came to life in the early 20th century thanks to a generous gift from George Rhodius Jr., a local businessman with a vision.
Landscape architect George Kessler designed this space with the idea that city dwellers needed room to breathe. Located between Big Eagle Creek and the White River along Belmont Avenue, the park combines peaceful green spaces with recreational areas for both relaxation and activity.
What You'll Find
The park invites you to slow down and soak in the calm with its beautiful landscapes. Well-kept walking trails wind through the greenery, perfect whether you're out for a gentle stroll or working up a sweat on a morning jog.
There's something here for everyone, no matter what your idea of outdoor fun looks like. There's also a cool bit of local culture here - the playground bears the name of John Cascella, who once played in John Mellencamp's band. It's these little touches that connect the park to the local community and its history.
Get Active
When summer hits, the swimming pool becomes the place to be. At around $10 for families, it's an affordable way to beat the heat. Come winter, locals flock to the sledding hill with their sleds and smiles, ready for some snowy fun.
Baseball fans will appreciate the multiple baseball and softball fields where Little League dreams take shape throughout the season. There's even a concession stand nearby when hunger strikes mid-game.
The playground area offers a safer landing with its soft ground surfacing, however some equipment might show signs of its popularity over the years.
The Heart of the Neighborhood
Rhodius Park functions as both a green space and a community gathering place. At the center of it all stands the Rhodius Park Family Center, hosting everything from energetic Zumba classes to various community programs that bring neighbors together.
Despite being surrounded by industrial buildings and modest homes, the park has a pleasant atmosphere that locals appreciate. The park provides a good vantage point for July 4th fireworks, making it a popular spot for holiday celebrations.
Unwind and Connect
Planning a get-together? The spacious picnic areas come equipped with tables and grills, well-suited for family reunions or casual weekend cookouts. Green space abounds within the park, giving you plenty of room to throw a frisbee, read a book, or simply lie back and watch the clouds drift by.
Four-legged friends are welcome too, with paved walkways that make dog walking a breeze. When nature calls (the other kind), you'll come across porta-potties in the main areas, while those attending programs at the Family Center can access the cleaner indoor restrooms there.
